I am sharing my experience at Local 1896 to help prospective residents make an informed decision. During my tenancy, I experienced several ongoing issues related to cost, communication, maintenance, and overall quality and safety of living. In addition to base rent and utilities, there were multiple mandatory fees added monthly, including a valet trash charge, which increased the overall cost of living beyond what I initially expected. Although the property is advertised as smoke-free, odors from neighboring units, including marijuana smoke, frequently entered my apartment through the ventilation system. I submitted maintenance requests regarding this issue, as the ventilation did not appear to function properly, but the problem persisted throughout my stay. Communication with the leasing office was consistently difficult. Many phone calls and emails went unanswered, and speaking with staff in person was often challenging due to limited office hours that overlapped with standard work hours, as well as frequent delays in opening and extended absences during posted hours. Mail delivery was another concern. Mail was regularly placed in incorrect mailboxes, and packages occasionally went missing, including those delivered to the package lockboxes. I contacted the office multiple times regarding these issues but did not receive a response. I also had safety concerns during my time on the property. There were multiple incidents on the grounds involving loud disturbances that appeared to include firearms being discharged. In one instance, while leaving for work, I encountered an individual involved in one of these incidents and reported the situation to management. I was informed that it would be looked into and that I would receive follow-up communication. I did not receive any updates, and when I later contacted the office again, the response felt dismissive and my concern was characterized as a noise issue rather than a safety concern. I have documentation of this correspondence. Operational communication was inconsistent as well. Access codes for shared amenities, such as the laundry and amenity building, were changed without residents being notified for extended periods of time, limiting access to amenities. The unit itself had several maintenance and construction issues. Noise traveled easily between floors, even when upstairs neighbors were generally quiet. Many surfaces appeared to have been painted over rather than properly refinished, including the shower, where paint began peeling shortly after move-in. Additionally, the utility closet in my first-floor unit leaked during rain, even light rainfall. Although maintenance marked the issue as repaired, the leaking continued. Upon move-out, obtaining my refund was more difficult than expected and ultimately required contacting the corporate office to resolve. One positive note is that some units include small private yards, which can be a benefit for residents with pets. While every renter’s experience may differ, based on my time at Local 1896, I would strongly encourage prospective tenants to carefully review all reviews, fees, and ask detailed questions before signing a lease.

The apartments here are in a great location. The outside of the property is very well maintained along with the gym (which is well equipped) and pool. I'd say the insides are well maintained, the maintenance team is very responsive to requests and super polite. The management at this property is the main reason I am reviewing it so low. The issues we had with the management staff were numerous and many never resolved before we moved out. My emails would go without response for weeks at a time despite multiple follow ups on email and at the office in person. I had billing issues constantly with being charged for things which I should not have; - Monthly charges for not having renters insurance which was never reimbursed (despite sending confirmation of insurance before moving in) - Inconsistent fees from the company that managed the online billing, which in the lease and added after several months of living in the community - Many issues with getting internet set up through Xfinity, which was supposed to be provided by Local 1896, but took well over 20 hours of my time on the phone with Xfinity over several months. All this only to have Xfinity repeatedly threaten to shut off my internet and getting very little assistance from Local 1896 management or their Xfinity representative - Additional billing inconsistencies where I was billed after move out and did not receive any of my deposit because of additional fees that had not been posted to me account at move-out (for which I gave about 40 days notice). After emailing the office about this several times, they never emailed me back and sent the bill to collections without any communication to me to answer my questions All my neighbors were nice, the community was clean and well maintained; if they could fix their issues with community managers (of which we had 3 during our 8 month lease) being non-responsive and generally unhelpful if they do get back to you, they would have something nice here. I cannot recommend this place due to the issues I had with management and learned that several of my neighbors also had after speaking with them.

10 month update on living at Local 1896 and I can't say enough positive things about living here. They recently remodeled the Gym and replaced everything and out of all the paid Gyms in town the equipment and here is the best. The pool looks amazing and is heated! They recently redid the entire property over the summer and it feels like a new property but with the charm of an established connected community. Athena the property manager has been nothing but stellar and rarely do I need anything but every interaction is 100%. Definitely will be renewing my lease in December. Side not if you're thinking of moving here the process could not have been easier.
