The lady who sells the fish may be the rudest most criticizing woman I’ve ever met. I went in on separate occasions, merely looking at the fish, only purchasing fish food for the single goldfish I had at home. She asked me if I needed help and I said no. She proceeded to bombard me with questions, judging me for having “too small a tank” and not having everything I needed yet for a fish. Which is obviously why I was at Petco…. I got this goldfish at the fair, so obviously I didn’t have a tank waiting for me at home. He was in a waiting tank. She made me feel like an absolute idiot for this. I go to PetSmart now, but a couple of months later I decided to go to Petco out of pure boredom and possible plants for my tank. She asked me if I needed help, again I said “No, I’m not looking to buy” but she kept asking probing questions as I moved around the tanks. I am showing very negative body language at this point, not replying, and lowkey trying to escape. She asks me what fish I have in my tank and what size it is. I tell her that my goldfish, algae eater, and sizable dwarf frog are in a 30 gallon tank, and I might add guppies later on. She immediately shuts the conversation down and insists that I surrender the goldfish to her immediately because it “needs at least a 140 gallon tank.” For a juvenile goldfish… So I was like “I don’t know, I think it’s fine for now and if he gets bigger I can upgrade,” but she didn’t like that. Apparently my goldfish is going to “die a slow and painful death” if I didn’t bring it to her to “sell to someone with a 140 gallon tank and who plans on putting the goldfish in their koi pond.” She belittled me, and said she wouldn’t sell me a fish until I brought her my goldfish. And I once again reminded her that I WASNT EVEN LOOKING TO BUY A FISH FROM HER. After she continued talking for 15 minutes (and pulling a dead fish out of a tank with her hand and holding it there for 1/4 of her speech), I walked away. I stayed kind as long as I could, but now I see it’s not just me experiencing this problem. Petco, you are losing money. I would estimate that you’re actually losing a LOT of money by keeping this horrifyingly judgmental woman as your fish salesperson. Not to mention her lack of customer service skills. She really knows how to make people want to leave the store.
