Last night I went in to buy a habitat for my jumper and a tank upgrade (betta fish enthusiast). I happen to be looking at betta buddy plants when I saw a betta floating on its side. At checkout, I told the woman there was a betta with a case of swim bladder. She acknowledged it, I finished check and left. Realized when I got home I forgot landscaping tools for my aquarium. I returned this morning and that betta was still there on the shelf. My fiancé took it up to the counter. Each time I passed the shelf, I noticed more struggling Bettas. One was dead and looked like it had been rotting for a hot minute. Another also had a bad case of swim bladder. Another may have been affected by swim bladder, this one was floating vertical. We brought the side floater up to the counter and then returned to shopping. As we finished paying, a male worker on the left checkout picked it up and dropped it down on a surface behind him, scaring the sick Betta. I do realize people don’t generally have strong emotions towards fish. However, I do believe that they deserve the best treatment and care as though they matter. I don’t believe the water is being changed regularly which would explain why so many fish on those shelves were sick/dead. Had I assumed neglect, I would have taken pictures of them. My first thought was not to accuse, but to alert to the overlooked condition. But when that fish was plopped down on the counter that way, I realized maybe I should have assumed the worst and took pictures. I understand that sometimes these things cannot be helped. But I do not understand how they were out on the floor for sale that way. You don’t have to be an expert to see that there’s an issue. Customers should not be bringing dead inventory to your counter. It does matter, ask WalMart. When I tell someone they have an animal that needs placed in a quarantine tank, they can at least ask where it is and remove it from the floor so customers can remain ignorant to the abuse. I would rather spend my $400 at Petsmart where they not only care for their Betta’s but adopt them out for free when they’re injured or sick. Next time I step in that store, it’s not gonna be to purchase, it’s gonna be to take pictures of the sick Bettas.
