They won't let you cancel your subscription if your pet dies! You will keep getting a monthly charge to remind you of of your painful loss. Do they need to? No. Do they care? No. Straight up evil.
After 9 great years I had to put my cat down earlier this month; she was the sweetest cat I'd ever owned. Obviously I was heartbroken. The staff at Banfield were wonderful throughout the death process. This 1 star review is for the corporate ownership who clearly only care about the bottom line and not a grieving pet owner. I had been on the Wellness + plan for years as my cat needed occasional dental work, which just renewed in November. When I contacted Banfield to cancel the policy after my cat died, they told me I needed to pay the remaining 9 months of the Wellness Plan, despite the fact that my cat is no longer alive to be seen and treated. I was flabbergasted - their reasoning was because I had used the plan benefits (procedure discounts, office visits) for 3 months, so I needed to pay the full plan amount. I obviously wouldn't have signed up for the full year if I knew my cat was going to die so soon. To top it off, my cat was too sick to receive any dental care so I never used the "Plus" part of my plan. I asked if they would at least lower the regular Wellness plan but apparently their "system doesn't allow that". I feel taken advantage of in a time of grief. When your pet dies, it feels evil to keep charging grieving owners for services they obviously won't be using. Now I'll get a painful reminder of my loss every month when I see the monthly Wellness charge hit my credit card. I understand this is a business and cancelling a plan would normally require paying the full year, but the death of a pet feels like this should be an obvious exception. I'm leaving my multi-year experience with Banfield with a very sour taste and I do not recommend anyone give their money to this company; it's clear they will do anything they can to suck more money from you before you go.

I am beyond furious with Banfield. This is, without question, the most unprofessional and irresponsible veterinary experience I have ever had.
I brought my three-month-old German Shepherd puppy to Banfield, trusting them with her life. They diagnosed her with epilepsy and put her on a seizure medication that could have been seriously damaging her liver and kidneys—without confirming the diagnosis properly. They made me believe my baby had a lifelong neurological condition.
Her symptoms became so severe that I had to rush her to an emergency vet. That’s when everything unraveled.
The emergency vet reviewed Banfield’s records and discovered that Banfield claimed they performed tests that they did NOT actually do. They said they had run bloodwork to check for toxins and other concerns—they did not. There was no toxin screen performed at all, despite toxins being the actual underlying issue. Even worse, there were abnormal blood results in her report that Banfield NEVER disclosed to me.
This is not a small oversight. This is dangerous.
On top of that, despite the fact that I am already on their wellness/insurance plan and pay $100 a month, Banfield charged me an unexpected $260 when I went to pick her up—without any prior notice or consent. Completely unacceptable.
When I called to explain how serious this situation was and how unhappy I was, Banfield had the same veterinarian who misrepresented the care call me back. Instead of accountability, I received excuses, deflection, and straight-up gaslighting, being told I was wrong—despite documentation and confirmation from an emergency veterinary hospital.
I would never bring my dog here again. I wouldn’t bring my dog here if someone paid me to. If you love your pet, please go somewhere else. My puppy suffered unnecessarily because of Banfield’s negligence, lack of transparency, and total lack of professionalism.

Horrible front desk clerk. The girl with black hair at 5:30p on Friday was literally horrible at her job. I must’ve waited on line for 30 minutes while she very slowly helped some lady. She didn’t even acknowledge me or apologize for the wait. Had she simply told me, “hey it’s going to be a minute,” that would’ve mitigated the wait but banfield and their team are terrible at customer satisfaction.

We had a really horrible experience with our last vet, and decided to give Banfield a shot since we had a somewhat emergent situation with our dog. I feel badly about not getting the names of everyone, but wow the staff we interacted with were incredible. As many can relate, unexpected vet bills can be so stressful and they listened to our concerns and needs about our financial situation and did everything they could to honor that, without skimping on care for our dog. I am truly impressed with the level of care and concern and patience they all had from start to finish. I am truly grateful, and look forward to getting my wild black lab back to her goofy self
Frequently Asked Questions About Banfield Pet Hospital
Does Banfield provide emergency care services?

To help pets and their people stay healthy, Banfield clients who have Optimum Wellness Plans® can get remote general pet care advice and triage support directly from a veterinarian 24/7 through Vet Chat™ on the Banfield app.
What preventive pet health care services does Banfield offer?
We believe that preventive care is the most effective way to keep your pet healthy throughout all stages of life. Our pet hospitals offer many preventive care treatments, including:
• Vaccinations
• Dental Care

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
• Optimum Wellness Plans® Virtual Visits: If you have an Optimum Wellness Plan and scheduled a Virtual Visit, you’ll save valuable time and get quality care from the comfort of your home.
