They won't let you cancel your subscription if your pet dies! You will keep getting a monthly charge to remind you of of your painful loss. Do they need to? No. Do they care? No. Straight up evil.
After 9 great years I had to put my cat down earlier this month; she was the sweetest cat I'd ever owned. Obviously I was heartbroken. The staff at Banfield were wonderful throughout the process. I would leave them 5 stars. However, this 1 star review is for the corporate ownership who clearly only care about the bottom line and not a grieving pet owner. I had been on the Wellness + plan for years as my cat needed occasional dental work, which just renewed in November. When I contacted Banfield to cancel the policy after my cat died, they told me I needed to pay the remaining 9 months of the Wellness Plan, despite the fact that my cat is no longer alive to be seen and treated. I was flabbergasted - their reasoning was because I had used the plan benefits (procedure discounts, office visits) for 3 months, so I needed to pay the full plan amount. I obviously wouldn't have signed up for the full year if I knew my cat was going to die so soon. To top it off, my cat was too sick to receive any dental care so I never used the "Plus" part of my plan. I asked if they would at least lower the regular Wellness plan but apparently their "system doesn't allow that". I feel taken advantage of in a time of grief. When your pet dies, it feels evil to keep charging grieving owners for services they obviously won't be using. Now I'll get a painful reminder of my loss every month when I see the monthly Wellness charge hit my credit card. I understand this is a business and cancelling a plan would normally require paying the full year, but the death of a pet feels like this should be an obvious exception. I'm leaving my multi-year experience with Banfield with a very sour taste and I do not recommend anyone give their money to this company; it's clear they will do anything they can to suck more money from you before you go.

High level: We've taken our pets to banfield probably one hundred times. I would have considered them our primary vet and have had their insurance plan for years for multiple pets. Due to the care we received for our very sick dog today, I don't think I will ever return.
Details: our dog, which doesn't have much time left, needed a procedure. The specialist we are seeing could do the procedure, but recommended that we contact our primary vet to see if they can do it and get to her quickly. Naturally, our first thought was banfield.
We sent all the records to banfield and confirmed they could do this procedure multiple times.
Before booking the appointment, we stressed the urgency and said we would only book with them if they could get to her quickly. Which we were assured they could do.
We were booked for the first thing in the morning, with a drop-off at 7am. We didn't hear anything by 2pm when we called to check, and they said they had an emergency and hadn't gotten to her, which was disappointing but understandable.
At 3:00pm, we got a call from banfield letting us know they couldn't perform the procedure at all and that we needed to pick her up.
Due to the timing, we had to take her to the emergency vet, as it was late on a Thursday before a long weekend.
Not only is this incredibly more expensive than going anywhere else, but we are devastated that we wasted one of our last days with our dog by choosing and trusting banfield.

I do not recommend this practice if you have a job with non-traditional hours, want or need to schedule online, want to be billed accurately and on time, or an elderly cat with multiple health problems. When I have tried to resolve these issues, I have been met with passive aggression and just plain aggression. I do not enjoy being condescended to and spoken to slowly like I'm a toddler.
I have been told I’m not allowed to schedule appointments in a room to stay with my elderly “aggressive” cat. He is only aggressive here. Animals know stuff. I have been told I can’t schedule dental appointments online and that it says I can’t (it says nothing of the sort). I have been told I’m not allowed to drop off after 8 AM for dental appointments and regular appointments.
Every time I schedule online, I get a call that they can’t actually honor that time and am forced to reschedule. This would all be irritating if I worked a job with normal hours, but I don’t, so it’s far past irritating. I am not able to bring my cats in at the whim of this practice and hold my job.
I am also not able to have money in my debit account for whenever Banfield decides to charge me. Before and after I turned off autopay online, they would wait until the bill was a day late and then push the charge through anyway. I assume to make sure they got the $20 late fee too. It's illegal for them to do this by the way. Make your own choices, but all of this behavior has made it loud and clear to me that they do not care about you or your animals. Or perhaps they only treat their trans clients this way. Who knows.
It’s a bummer my cat won’t be getting the teeth cleaning I was entitled to under the terms of my plan.
Heart of Chelsea is nearby and only costs a little more. In fact, I just paid $350 for more services than what Banfield charges me $480 for (and this was with my OWP). Heart of Chelsea will treat both you and your pet with respect. They have been so lovely throughout this process. They text me to check in. Their exam rooms are cat-friendly, with spots for them to hide to feel safe. I've been getting actual answers for why my elderly cat is sick that Banfield missed. Apparently it's not normal for cats to throw up hairballs regularly. I brought it up at every Banfield appointment and it was never followed up on.
If you would like an update as of 1/20/26 of what it's been like trying to get my concerns resolved, contact me and I will provide you a link to the full google doc outlining my experiences. I am also happy to provide proof: copies of documents, screenshots, and e-mails related to this complaint. I will just need to verify that you are not affiliated with Banfield first.
TL;DR: Banfield's VP of Client Experiences told me *in writing* that Banfield's policy is to engage in illegal billing practices AND refused to negotiate the settlement they offered me. I objected to the requirements to not talk about my experience with Banfield to anyone, delete or retract previously truthful statements, and not work with legal authorities unless compelled. They would not budge on these fair and standard asks, so I did not sign.
This isn't about the money for me: My OWP contract is up in a month anyway. This is about corporations thinking they can do whatever they want and get away with it. How many of you have spent hours on the phone with a corporation just trying to get a corporation to honor their own contract, promised services, or advertising? It's time that ends. I hope you'll fight it too.

I've been a client at Banfield Pet Hospital in Ballard for quite some time, and they've supported me through various stages of pet care. They've been incredible in helping me manage my diabetic dog and also welcoming my new puppy. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable, and thorough in their explanations. I really appreciate the transparency in pricing, which helps me plan financially for my pet's care. Plus, the Banfield app is super convenient for accessing records anytime. Overall, I highly recommend them!"
