This was our second visit to the Hope Center ER. Our first visit, during the night, left us deeply impressed by the efficiency and compassion of the entire team. During this visit, we again experienced kindness from the technician who gently took our dying pet to the back, as well as from Dr. Mason who cared for her. We are truly grateful for their empathy during such a painful time.
However, our experience at the front desk this morning was very upsetting. The staff member, Deb, displayed behavior that felt inappropriate and insensitive given the circumstances. During one of the most difficult moments for our family—making end-of-life decisions for our pet—her demeanor came across as loud, dismissive, and lacking compassion.
She told us that the doctor would not release our cat to us because she was “actively passing,” and also stated that we could not take her home after. This added distress to an already heartbreaking situation. Her communication felt abrupt and, at times, inaccurate, dismissive, bizarre and rude, which made the experience even more difficult. She was annoyed with us that we made the decision to take our cat home to pass peacefully than be hooked to machines!
I did bring this to the doctor’s attention, and while the doctor apologized, the explanation that the front desk was understaffed and she is alone did not justify the lack of empathy we experienced—especially when there were no other clients waiting the whole time we were there.
The clinical team is doing meaningful, compassionate work, and they deserve front-facing staff who reflect the same level of care. I strongly encourage management to address this—whether through additional staffing, training, or both—so that other families do not go through a similar experience during such a vulnerable time.

This review is honestly a long time coming, but I truly appreciate Dr. Adkins and her team at Hope Veterinary Ophthalmology in Vienna, VA for everything they’ve done for my dog, Raven.
When we first got Raven, she was diagnosed with entropion and distichiasis, and we were referred to a specialty clinic. It was overwhelming, and we knew she had a tough road ahead. Raven ended up needing three surgeries, and Dr. Adkins was always honest with us that because her case was so severe, the surgeries might not fully fix everything.
Throughout the entire process, her and her team were incredibly communicative, understanding, and so kind. They treated Raven with so much care and always made us feel supported.
Now, Raven is thriving. The difference is amazing! The only thing we have to do now is use eye lubricant, and she hasn’t had any issues with her eyes for a long time.
If your pet is going through something similar, I highly recommend Dr. Adkins and her team. They truly changed Raven’s quality of life, and I’m so grateful for them!
We had an amazing experience with Dr. Adkins and her team! Dr. Adkins was kind, caring, and made sure all of our questions and concerns were addressed.
Going through the experience of our furry friend having and healing from a corneal ulcer has been stressful, but if we ever encounter this issue again, we know where to come!

Doctor’s rude and lazy. You can be a client there and they still will refer you somewhere else. They don’t share records with departments in the same business even if surgery was done. So if you need to go back in on an emergency basis you waste your time calling because they are going to put you off even though you spend thousands of dollars there. It doesn’t make sense because you send me somewhere else and they don’t have records either so you end up spending money on things you already done. Don’t waste your time or money here and just go to a specialist whose all under one and share records.

We took our family dog, Chloe, here during the last couple weeks of her life. The staff and doctors (especially Dr. Pugh and Dr. Zimmer) were so patient, explained all the options, answered our many questions, and it felt like they understood how much we loved Chloe, reflective in their care practices.
