Overheard the vet, Doctor Athar, screaming at a customer/patient. I was just in an aisle over shopping for other stuff in the PetSmart side of the store and was astounded an adult would throw a tantrum like this. I know Peidmont Pets in Warrenton wouldn't treat pet parents this way, thats for sure. Never even gonna consider bringing in my business here. I'd give less than one star if I could.

Update: I have also since learned after reading his medical records that my dog received CPR. It was not documented in his Banfield records and they not once told me this happened while I was only feet away in the lobby when this occurred. Please see the attached photo and come here at your own risk. I was NEVER informed that this took place (how scary is that?). Doesn’t sound like a moderate reaction to me when he had to be resuscitated. It has taken me a while to write this review, but after retrieving my dogs medical records, I feel my story is important for other pet owners. In January 2025, my perfectly healthy 1year old dog was vaccinated here. I was in the room when my dog was administered the oral Bordetella vaccine intramuscularly in the thigh along with rabies. At the time, I had no idea that Bordetella was meant to be given orally. if I had known, I never would have consented to it being injected. According to the manufacturer’s guidelines, oral Bordetella should never be given intramuscularly, and doing so is specifically warned against because of the risk of adverse reactions. The severity of this mistake became evident almost immediately. Within 30–45 minutes, my dog was in crisis: vomiting, diarrhea, collapsing, with bradycardia and hypotension, and he went into anaphylaxis. His bloodwork later revealed liver abnormalities as well. Since receiving his chart, I noticed that when I rushed him back to PetSmart with all of these symptoms, the incident was documented only as a “moderate reaction.” That description does not reflect the seriousness of the event, especially given that I remained at the clinic from 3 p.m. until closing while he was treated in the back, and was ultimately told to take him to an emergency hospital because his vitals were not improving. He required epinephrine, IV fluids, steroids, anti-nausea medications, and overnight hospitalization to stabilize and survive. To describe this as “moderate” in the records minimizes the severity of the situation. In my view, the only reason he survived was because I recognized the symptoms quickly and sought emergency care. The adverse reactions he experienced match what is documented if an oral Bordetella vaccine is administered the wrong way. I later confirmed through records that the Bordetella administered was the oral version. Based on this experience and the seriousness of the mistake made, I do not feel this situation was handled with the level of care or transparency I expected. I can no longer recommend this clinic, and I will not be returning. I strongly encourage other pet owners to pay very close attention to what vaccines are being administered and how.

We always have an excellent experience at Banfield Veterinary Hospital. The staff is kind, understanding and friendly. They are very knowledgeable and treat our fur-baby, Oliver, as if he were their own. We got numerous updates regarding his progress with a planned time for pick-up. We love our vet!

Banfield in Gainesville is AMAZING!! Been going to then for almost 6 years now. Take both my dogs there. They take great care of both dogs and extra love to my beagle do to she's the unlucky one that can suffer seizures. They are a great team. From the front to the back, everyone is kind and courteous. Highly recommend and the pet plans are great as well.
