Cool place, people are friendly, have all you need. Curbside is always efficient.
Just bought some expensive dog food, my dog got sick, and I needed to exchange it for what the vet recommended. Sales rep wouldn't allow without receipt although it had only been a day.

I've been a loyal customer of Petco since the 90s. That ended today with the absolute worst customer service experience I've had in a retail store pretty much ever. I really can't think of a worse experience I've had in any store, or even on the phone. I've been aggravated plenty, but today I was at first shocked at this employee’s audacity, then livid at the mansplaining, sarcasm, and generally terrible attitude.
I went in to buy crickets for my tarantula. I have only one, and she doesn't eat a lot. I usually purchase 6 crickets because that's all I can keep alive before she eats them. First, I waited patiently while Josh helped another customer. There wasn't anyone else in the aquatics area to get crickets for me. They also only had large crickets pre-packed 60 per bag. When Josh returned to the aquatics area, he immediately turned his back to me because I guess he didn't think it was weird that I had just been standing there by the fish for 10 minutes. So I asked him if there was anyone who could get some crickets for me. He dismissed me by saying there are already some pre-packaged. So I told him I only needed 10 of them. Visibly annoyed, he proceeded to get the crickets, all the while telling me I needed to order them online and have them delivered right to my house! I said I didn't want to do that because they almost always arrive dead. I asked what people do when they order crickets that arrive dead and then they have nothing to feed their tarantula. His response was "Tarantulas can go a while." Not the point, Josh. Not the point.
Once he got the crickets into the bag, he tore off a piece of egg crate to put in there. I told him not to worry about the egg crate - I didn't want it. He put it in the bag and said "We do it anyway." (No you don't. I've bought thousands of crickets from Petco over the years, and never once has an employee added egg crate if I asked them not to, and in fact, they almost always ask if I want it or not.) I told him to take it out, and he refused. At that point he said he could just put the crickets back because I was being very rude to him. (HAHAHA!) I decided to leave rather than engage further. As I walked away, I asked him for his name. (I was pretty sure I already knew it, but I wanted to be sure.) He said "It's none of your business." I called BS, walked back to him, leaned in front of him to see his name tag, confirmed his name was Josh, then I left.
After I left Petco, I went around the corner to PetSmart. I generally don't go to PetSmart only because Petco is a little easier to get to, is usually a little less expensive on some things, and just out of general habit. But now I am a loyal PetSmart customer. I was waited on by a very nice young lady there who told me she'd be right with me while she finished up with another customer. There was only one cashier, and a line several people long, but it moved quickly. So as an added bonus, I won’t have to wait 10+ minutes to check out at Petco anymore.

I am writing to formally complain about a recent negative experience I had at your Hampton, VA location (26 Coliseum Crossing). As a Petco loyalty member who has spent hundreds of dollars at this store, I am extremely disappointed by the poor management and customer service I received.
On a recent visit(7/20/26), I purchased two orange bee neocaridina shrimp, one neon glowfish, and one large aquatic plant for my separate, dedicated tanks. Within 24 hours, one of the orange bee shrimp died, while the other shrimp purchased alongside it—and the rest of my existing shrimp—continued to thrive.
I returned to the store (7/21/26 around 1044 a.m.) with the dead shrimp, my receipt, and a water sample. The clerk directed me to the aquatic area, where I waited ten minutes for the female manager. When she assisted me, she insisted on testing the water. Although I explained that my other shrimp are thriving in a setup featuring dragon stone, wonder shell, and numerous live plants all purchased from your store, she claimed my pH was too low, which is not according to my at home kit. Perhaps placing it in a used drinking water bottle with residue may have altered results.
While she recommended a $16 product to raise the pH, which I was ready to purchase, she bluntly refused to refund, give store credit, or replace the $4.99 shrimp, blaming my water quality. When I asked why my other shrimp were doing so well, she simply waved her hand, said "sorry I won't help you," and dismissed me. Consequently, I put the $16 item back and left.
This individual showed a complete lack of customer service and management skills. Instead of offering a compromise to a loyal, repeat customer, she chose to lose both an immediate sale and my future business over a $4.99 shrimp. With numerous local competitors and online options like Amazon offering lower costs, Petco cannot afford to alienate customers with this kind of behavior.
I am in contact with Corporate. I have attached images of the shrimp that are thriving, (despite your managers claim) for your reference.
Update:
If your commitment to the wellness and health of pets is unwavering and a responsibility you take very seriously then why are there dead shrimp and fish in some of the tanks and additionally an infestation of pest snails? Furthermore, if this were true, why not require water test in order to purchase any aquatic pet? It is clear you do not honor your 30 day guarantee of life policy.
