Banfield Pet Hospital® - Colonial Heights provides quality and attentive health and wellness care for dog, cat and small animal pet patients. Our veterinarians and staff are committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and preventive health care with a full-service medical facility offering general services like routine vaccinations, microchipping, dental and surgical care and more. We are accepting new patients now.
This place should be called “Care Less” Pet Hospital, because that is exactly how our experience has felt.
My problem is the complete unwillingness of this location to HELP or even TRY to find a resolution. Even worse, they don't even seem interested in pretending that they care.
I signed up for the Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan because it includes a dental cleaning, vaccinations, and other preventive services. I have been trying since January to schedule my pet's included dental cleaning. I did not wait until my plan was about to expire. I have spent months trying to get this service completed.
Communication with this location is terrible. They frequently do not answer the phone or return calls. I have literally had to DRIVE TO THE LOCATION just to make an appointment.
After trying since January, the best appointment they could finally provide was one week before my plan expires. Now, with only six days remaining on a plan I have been paying for, I finally get my pet there and they refuse to do the cleaning.
What bothered me most was the complete lack of effort to find a solution.
This was NOT a day when they appeared overwhelmed with animals. There were approximately 10 pets on the board. I have personally seen that board three times as full, so I know what a genuinely busy day there looks like. Obviously, the veterinarian isn't performing every dental procedure simultaneously. Based on what I observed, I firmly believe that if they genuinely wanted to help, they could have at least explored whether there was a way to accommodate us.
Maybe the answer ultimately would still have been no. But there is an enormous difference between being unable to help and being unwilling to even try.
There was No meaningful attempt to check for another option. No discussion about protecting the dental benefit if they couldn't reschedule before expiration. No apparent concern whatsoever about whether I received a service I have already paid for.
They didn't just seem unwilling to help, they didn't even seem concerned about appearing unwilling to help.
You would think that in a business centered around caring for people's animals, even if you couldn't accommodate someone, there would at least be some compassion. “I'm sorry. I can see you've been trying for months. Let me see what I can do.”
At least PRETEND to care.
I had previously been told that as long as I got my pet there around 9:00 a.m., it should be okay. But the exact time isn't my primary complaint. The real issue is what happened when there was a problem: nobody seemed interested in finding a resolution.
I have also been inside PetSmart numerous times and noticed Banfield closed early. Combined with unanswered calls, unreturned messages, and the lack of willingness to help, my experience has left me wondering whether the priority is actually serving customers or simply getting through the day and closing the doors.
I am honestly shocked this location's rating is anywhere near 3 stars. I have personally stood in line and watched frustrated pet owner after frustrated pet owner describe similar poor service.
Ultimately, I PAID FOR THIS SERVICE. I started trying to schedule it in January. Banfield finally scheduled it one week before my plan expired, and now I have only six days remaining.
I wasn't asking them to perform the impossible. I was asking them to CARE ENOUGH TO TRY.
Check the schedule. Talk to the veterinarian. Ask a manager. See if we can wait. Find another appointment. Find another location. Protect the benefit from expiring. Offer an extension. Do something.
There is a huge difference between “We genuinely tried everything and unfortunately can't accommodate you” and simply “No.” They do not care.

This is by far the worst Banfield location I have ever visited. I dropped my cat off at 8:00 AM, and they did not even start checking her until after noon. Communications were terrible; their phones were broken, so they would call but the line wouldn't connect. When I finally went in person at 5:00 PM—nine hours after drop-off—they still hadn't actually treated her. They finally diagnosed an abscess on her back and handed me a huge bill.
The worst part happened three days later when the abscess swelled up again. When I called for help, they told me they had no space and essentially told me to figure it out myself. I had to take my cat to an urgent care clinic, costing me an extra $650 and hours of wasted time. Other Banfield locations in different states at least follow up the next day to check on your pet. This location has zero customer courtesy and terrible patient care. Avoid this place.

This is the worst veterinary clinic I have ever been to. The communication was terrible, and I received a lot of misinformation.
I scheduled an appointment online for my sick dog because they had next-day availability. I normally wouldn’t have chosen this clinic, but I wanted to get her seen as soon as possible. When I arrived, they told me they don’t take appointments that late in the day, even though their online system allowed me to book it.
They recommended that I schedule an earlier appointment at another location for the following day, which I did. They also scheduled me for an appointment at their clinic two days later as a backup in case the other location couldn’t see us. However, when I arrived at the other location, it was closed.
I ended up keeping the appointment I had made with them, and the veterinarian told me my dog should be fine and that she just needed to ride it out. I’m not a veterinarian, so I trusted their advice and took her home.
Unfortunately, my dog’s condition got significantly worse. The next day they were open (Monday), I called around 10:00 a.m. They told me their computers were down and that they couldn’t access my dog’s records, but they would call me back once they were able to speak with the veterinarian who had seen her. I said okay and waited. After an hour passed, then another, and then another, I called back around 1:00 p.m. I was told the computers were still down but that I would receive a call back within a few minutes.
That never called.
I called again around 5:00 p.m. This time, they claimed they had tried calling me multiple times, but I never received a single phone call and had no missed calls in my call log. They also told me the veterinarian I had seen wouldn’t be back until Thursday and that they would call me then. They never did.
Later that day, I called again. They told me the veterinarian would definitely be in on Friday, but because my dog’s condition was getting worse, they would speak with another veterinarian to see if they could prescribe her medication and would call me back within a few minutes.
Once again, I never received a call. After that, they stopped answering the phone for the rest of Thursday and all of Friday.
I will never return to this clinic. They were consistently unprofessional, failed to communicate, and repeatedly wasted my time while my dog’s health continued to decline. When someone’s pet is sick, they deserve timely communication and reliable care.
