Really disappointed with my experience here. As soon as I walked in, the manager immediately assumed I was trying to surrender my pet and said, “We don’t do surrenders,” before even asking why I was there. I wasn’t trying to surrender my pet—I was returning it under Petco’s return policy. The whole interaction felt rude and dismissive. A simple “How can I help you?” or asking a couple of questions first could’ve cleared everything up. Instead, she just made assumptions and had an attitude from the start. She became argumentative before finishing the return. I ended up canceling my Petco membership because of how I was treated. Customer service goes a long way, and unfortunately, this experience wasn’t it. Everyone has bad days but don’t bleed on other people. Her attitude was funky, and because of her, she set the tone for the other workers to have a nasty attitude too.

I don’t remember ever being told I can’t buy something. We lost one of our Albino Catfish and I came in to get another 1-2. They didn’t have any. I’m ok with that. I did see that they had plenty of Neon Tetras, so decided to grab 4 to up our numbers. These are social fish and it’s always recommended to have at least 7. We have 4. The cats are the same way and it’s recommended to have 2-3. No one was near the tanks, so I found someone and asked for help. Once I told her I wanted 4 neons, she broke out her calculator on her phone and hit me with questions about my tank. Now, I’ve had my tank active for 10 years, at least. I know its condition, its population and patterns. Well, after multiple calculations, I was informed my tank has too many fish and the waste is killing them. “So I can’t buy any fish for my 20 gallon thriving tank!” “No, (with some justification that I totally blanked out due to the awesome customer service. )” To say I felt uncomfortable, is pretty accurate. Well, my first 1 star. Guess I’m a bad fish owner. 😢 yes, that’s my tank.

Very disappointing experience at Petco. I had an unpleasant interaction with the store manager over purchasing a single tetra fish. Despite multiple tanks containing visibly sick and dead fish, I was told I could only buy 7 tetras instead of 8 because adding one more would supposedly “overstock” my aquarium. I appreciate responsible fishkeeping and understand the purpose of store policies, but it felt incredibly hypocritical to enforce such a strict rule while fish in the store itself appeared unhealthy and poorly maintained. Rather than educating customers and applying common sense, the manager chose to rigidly enforce a policy that made no sense in this situation. Customer service and animal welfare should go hand in hand. Seeing dead and sick fish in the tanks while being denied a single healthy fish over an arbitrary stocking concern left me frustrated and disappointed. Based on this experience, I will no longer do business with this store and will be taking my business elsewhere. I expected better from a company that promotes responsible pet care.

My only concern is the amount of dead fish they have in the store. I went in today to get a few for my tank, and half the fish are dead and pressed up against the air pumps or stuck under gravel at the bottom. It’s very disturbing that they just leave that many dead fish in the tank instead of removing them. The bettas they have in cups are also in very poor condition.

HORRIFIED at a recent experience in the fish department here. Did not come to buy a new fish but just happened to walk past the betta shelf and spotted a concerningly high number of sick fish suffering from swim bladder / possibly dropsy (huge red flag as fish were all reduced price - noting that staff noticed illness enough to drop the price but did not care enough to administer medication). One fish was so sick that it was stuck at the bottom of the tub, had lost all its colour, and was slightly on its side. I have successfully been able to rescue and rehab extremely sick bettas from other Petcos in the past, so asked an employee if it would be possible for them to surrender the fish to me since I had the medication that the store didn't seem to carry (and offered to pay if surrendering was not an option!). The employee snatched the fish from me and proceeded to calmly pour the fish down the sink - essentially murdering the fish?! Then the employee had the audacity to tell me after that he would get the fish the medication it needed. Absolutely disgusted in the lack of respect and care for live animals here, and further horrified that this person was able to so calmly engage in an inhumane activity that was neither allowed or encouraged by the Petco code of ethics (page 6. animal care section). This employee had long brunette hair, wore a cloth mask, glasses, and was stationed in the fish section the whole time I was there. If you value ethical treatment of animals, do not take your business to this store.
