My experience with Vetco Total Care was amazing! We brought our sweet cat in when he was running a fever and the staff was super amazing and Dr. Medina was super attentive and informative. They were super helpful and kind when we were worried his fever wasn't going down after he was discharged, and they were able to watch him for two days, ensuring he got proper care and fluids he needed. Dr. Medina and Ms. Melinda were awesome! Now our Ponyboy is feeling and doing so much better thanks to them and their care!

I’ve seen three different vets in the River Oaks area over the past year, and each visit felt more disappointing—and more expensive—than the last. A friend recommended I try Vetco at the Petco on Shepherd, and I’ll admit I was skeptical. No flashy lobby, no big marketing push, none of the “boutique vet” amenities you see around here. But after my first visit, I realized quickly that none of the optics matter when the care is genuinely good. Every visit since, (I think I am up to 5 or 6 now), has reinforced that this is the most honest, straightforward veterinary team I’ve found in Houston (perhaps anywhere in the big cities I've lived with pets in the US). To illustrate - Today, during a routine wellness check, I asked about getting my dog’s nails trimmed. Instead of adding another charge, they told me I’d save money by having the groomer do it. That kind of honesty is rare. Keep in mind, it was only $10 extra and at that point my pup was accustomed to Christian and Valentin. But it was the principle that mattered to me. The real reeason I moved my business to Vetco is one of the previous vets (not to be named, but also in River Oaks) insisted I was neglecting my dog by not commissioning a heart worm test 6 months after completing our heartworm injection/treatment protocol. This is the same Vet that advised me to get a leptospirosis update shot a week before the heartworm treatment was scheduled - which my pup got very ill afterwards and complicated the heartworm treatment. That was a $350 mistake I didn't make but certainly paid for. Thats when I started going to the Vetco for another opinion about working through the longer term care needed for heartwork treatment recovery. The Vetco doctor at the time (I believe his name was Craig), not only disagreed with the other last vet, he even printed out a research paper explaining why make sense until at least 9 months—and to make me feel comfortable my pup was at no further risk, he then checked my dog’s vitals thoroughly to help me avoid the costs an unnecessary test would have been that the previous vet had recommended after giving me bad advise. Today I met Dr. Valentin Medina and a Vet Assistant Christian, and the experience was superb. Most vets take your pet to the back holding area, out of sight. Dr. Medina brought everything into the room so my dog stayed comfortable and calm together with me. It’s a small gesture, but it says a lot about how they operate. If you’ve been struggling to find a vet who doesn't treat you like an invoice, and who actually helps you understand how to keep your pet healthy—Vetco on Shepherd is worth the switch. Dr. Valentin and his team clearly prioritize your pet’s well‑being over up selling services. They’ve earned my trust, and they’ve changed the way I see veterinary care. They also follow-up so quickly, it's astounding. I had my records from the visit in hand within 30 minutes of the appointment! Bravo to the Vetco Houston South Shepherd team. I hope I won’t need to visit often, but when I do, I know I’ll get honest advice, fair pricing, and real care for my dog. Truly a top‑tier establishment.

I was a little worried given some of these reviews and I don’t want to invalidate anyone’s experience, but today I took my sweet old cat here for flea treatment / prevention and everyone was awesome. While I only booked for flea treatment, Dr. McGovern gave my cat a full exam and even addressed other concerns I had about my cat. Dr. McGovern and Blair (sorry if I am misspelling anyone’s name) were both kind and gentle with my cat. Thank you for your help today!

had a very disappointing experience at this store. After bringing my puppy in for shots he had an allergic reaction that appeared to be related to the products or treatment used during his visit. What upset me the most it was how the staff handled it afterward. When we returned to explain the situation, instead of showing concern or trying to help, the employees were rude, dismissive, and refused to take any accountability. As a pet owner, you trust a business to care for your animal safely, and when something goes wrong, you expect empathy and professionalism. Unfortunately, we received neither. I would not recommend this place based on my experience. They don’t care for the way they handle concerns about the health and safety of the pets in their care.

I had one of the worst experiences at Vetco/Petco. I originally went in for my dog's rabies vaccine. During the visit, the technician recommended another vaccine that she said my dog would likely need. Since they are the professionals, I trusted their recommendation and agreed. I was told the total would be around $244, but that I had a coupon that would save me $86. When I went to pay, the cashier told me that wasn't true because part of the discount had already been applied during the visit, so only about $44 would actually be deducted. Instead of paying around $160 as I expected, I ended up paying about $200. The pricing was not explained clearly, and I felt misled. The worst part happened after we left. About 30 minutes later, my dog had a severe reaction to the vaccines. He developed swelling, intense itching, red bumps all over his body, and started vomiting. I immediately called Petco, but they told me there was nothing they could do because the veterinarian had left just two minutes earlier. They told me to take him to the emergency vet and said someone would call me back. The next day they called and instructed me to bring my dog back to the same Petco location. I had to miss work and waste more of my time. When I got there, they barely examined my dog and didn't provide any treatment. Then I was told that if my dog needed any medication or additional care because of the vaccine reaction, I would have to pay for it myself. I don't think that's fair. My dog had a reaction after receiving vaccines they administered and recommended. I expected them to take responsibility, provide proper care, and show some compassion. Instead, I felt like no one cared. When I explained that I was missing work because they asked me to come back, the staff member simply told me, "If you're going to be late for work." The lack of empathy, poor communication, and unwillingness to help after my dog experienced a vaccine reaction were extremely disappointing. I will not be returning, and I hope this review helps other pet owners know what to expect.
