I brought the lack of emergency triage at Banfield Lakewood to corporate. Their response shows zero accountability:
* Insensitive Comparison: The regional Chief Executive called to offer condolences but inappropriately compared my fresh grief to her own personal experiences.
* No Staff Penalties: It became clear no one will be held accountable for this tragedy—not the receptionist, manager, or hospital staff.
* Surface-Level Fixes: They claim they will now train receptionists and print emergency facility addresses. This proves no protocol existed prior to this tragedy.
* Insulting Offer: To "help with the pain," they offered to cancel my wellness plan and cover the remaining contract balance.
Canceling a balance does not bring back Lucia, our loved family member. This clinic lacks basic emergency protocols, and corporate does not take fatal negligence seriously. Be very careful trusting your pets to Banfield.
*Saturday May 09, 2026–LUCIA*
This was the worst day of my life. I woke up and took my baby Lucia to the park to walk. After walking a little, Lucia was making a loud sound and stopped for me to carry her. I grabbed her and told her we were going home. She kept doing the noise and looked tired. I decided to turn around and took Lucia to her personal veterinarian, Banfield Hospital Lakewood. There was NOBODY at the front desk. NO RECEPTIONIST in service.
After 10 mins, a young Hispanic female came out. She was wearing black scrub pants with a black regular shirt. She said, “how can I help you.” I stated to her, “Hi I don’t have an appointment, but this is an emergency. I was walking my little dog and she is making a loud breathing noise and I see her weak.” She said, “oh, hold on just one second.” She went to the back and came back within five mins or less. Her exact words: “I’m sorry the doctor is in surgery, she said to take her to another Banfield Hospital or the emergency room. Because that’s not good.” My head was not all there. This is my first pet. I didn’t know where to go. I asked her where the closest Banfield was. She said, “there is one on Greenville Ave and one on Forest.” I looked at her, said thank you, and left.
Scared and confused, I started driving. Before I got out of the parking lot, I remembered a Banfield Hospital in Mesquite. I started driving to Mesquite and Lucia was still weak. I kept driving and told Lucia, “it’s ok baby we will be there in a minute,” and kissed her. Lucia started making the breathing noise again. I had Lucia in my arms. I called my sister who lives in Mesquite and told her to meet me at the Banfield Hospital in Mesquite because Lucia was not doing good. In my way driving, I felt Lucia like she was drained. I don’t even know how I got to the Mesquite clinic.
My sister and I arrived at the same time to the parking lot. We walked into Banfield Hospital Mesquite and explained the whole situation. The front desk was quick to assist us. She offered us a room and immediately called the doctor. The doctor and her assistant came to see us, but Lucia had left us. I was devastated and very confused. I asked the doctor, “what could you have done if she got here first?” The doctor stated, “stabilize her, then send her to the emergency room.”
I am very disappointed in Banfield Lakewood. Their job was to assist my baby. No help was given to me and no one guided me with knowledge or experience. The clinic has to have someone to assess the situation or a nurse as a backup while the doctor is in surgery. Terrible service, unprofessional, inexperienced, unethical, inhumane. Lucia went to that clinic for eight years. I want to know who made the decision to send my baby away. The situation was workable according to the doctor in Mesquite. My baby is gone and I am destroyed emotionally. Lucia was a member of our family and a companion. On top of all this, they sent me an email and a voicemail to confirm her appointment for Friday, May 15, 2026.

Do NOT bring your pet here.
I came to this location out of desperation. my dog had a cut that needed to be checked out, and they were able to get me in same day. That was the only positive thing I can say.
From the moment we arrived, the staff communication was virtually nonexistent. The doctor and assistant could not answer a single question I had about my dog's condition or treatment plan. Despite that, they insisted she needed emergency surgery and told me to bring her in the very next day, yet could not explain why the surgery was necessary, what it involved, or what the risks were. They also sent me home with medication without being able to confirm whether it was actually needed.
When I arrived the following morning for her drop-off, there was nobody at the front desk to check her in, even after I had called ahead to let them know I was on my way. At that point, I made the decision to leave and seek a second opinion.
I went to our primary Banfield on Forest Lane, where they examined her thoroughly and confirmed that sedation and stitches were not necessary at all.
This clinic pushed unnecessary emergency surgery on my dog, failed to communicate even the most basic information, and couldn't staff their front desk for a scheduled procedure. I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't trusted my gut and walked away.
Please do yourself and your pet a favor, go anywhere else.

Lakewood location: Dr Thorne is an absolute gem. She goes beyond care for our 6 animals. Annabel at the front desk is super friendly. Their website has some room for improvement, but our animals are in excellent care here.
