Purchased a Syrian Teddy Bear hamster from the Farragut Petco store when visiting family. They only had 1. The shopkeeper we spoke with said that they only had the hamster for one week, so we were lucky to get him. We got him home and put him in a large enclosure all to himself in a quiet place. We decked it out with a sand bath, tons of substrates, organic foods (some fresh), a dig box, hides, over 6 inches of bedding, and tons of things to forage for including dried plants/florals safe for hamsters. I did tons of research and prep work to be a hamster owner. This hamster had 3 days to himself before I tried to introduce myself. He sniffed me a few times and when I felt good about our interactions I tried to pick him up from underneath. The hamster bit me so hard it drew blood. I had to get stitches. I didn’t feel safe letting anyone touch the hamster again as it regularly bared its teeth so I decided it wasn’t a good fit for our family. Too wild and unsocialized. We decided to return him for a full refund to the nearest Petco which is an hour away from where we live. So we packed him up in a box (kept the top flaps kind of open for ventilation) and drove. Once getting there I let the clerk know that he wasn’t a good fit for us, likely not very socialized, and bit me very hard. I wanted to utilize the Petco return policy which states: “Companion Animals In-Store Guarantee: Companion animals purchased IN OUR STORES can be returned with a receipt within 30 days for a full refund to original form of payment.” I had my receipt with proof of purchase within 30 days. The clerk I spoke with was a shorter female-presenting individual with a bull-nose ring and skunk-like black/white/purple hair. I do not recall what the name was. Apparently the manager (whom I never got to meet) told the clerk to relay to me that their store couldn’t take the hamster back because they “didn’t have any room” (despite me noticing that there was several vacant glass enclosures in the small pet aisle) and that they wouldn’t take him even if they did have space because he is a male. I said that per the company policy online they really couldn’t refuse him. It’s a guarantee for all Petco stores. The clerk said it was a corporate policy and that she couldn’t do anything for me, but that I should drive to the Farragut store to ask them - a suggestion made even after telling her that I had already driven an hour. I asked her to show me the corporate policy she claims to state that Petco won’t take a returned companion pet. No surprise, but she refused. I was visibly upset at this point and asked her what I should do, just let the hamster go outside if Petco won’t honor their return policy? For goodness sake people even buy the poor creatures as snake food! She then threatened to call the police on me for abandonment and abuse of an animal due to there being no “air holes” (despite the top having a massive gap). I didn’t actually abandon the hamster at all, but I was trying to explain how ridiculous this whole thing was. It felt like a personal attack on me to refuse the hamster despite proving that there wasn’t a good reason for it. If anything, I think she should have been relieved that I cared enough to drive far to the nearest store and do the right thing! I also have two children who made the trip with me as I’m a full-time parent, so it was just totally ridiculous and asking a LOT of the kids to go further! A lot on the hamster too! I really hope that future companion pets purchased in store don’t get refused if a return is attempted because that’s how animals end up in shelters or worse. It’s just sad. I did end up driving all the way to Farragut to return the hamster and had to call ahead to tell the gentleman what I went through at the other store. He was very apologetic of the prior clerk’s behavior/attitude and told me that he would absolutely take the hamster in with a receipt per the online policy. Then from Farragut I had to drive another hour and 40 minutes home. Absolutely outrageous. All for a $25 refund and to be a good person.
