Im older, ive had dogs my entire life and ive lived all over and can 100% without a doubt say they are the best vet ive ever been too. They take great care of our pets and they take great care of their customers. I will be extremely sad when/if we move away.
Frequently Asked Questions About Black Hills Animal Hospital
What vaccines does my puppy need?
Puppies begin a series of DAPP vaccines (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza) at 6–8 weeks of age. These vaccinations are administered every 4 weeks, with two doses required after your puppy reaches 12 weeks of age.
The Leptospirosis vaccine series starts at 12 weeks of age and includes two doses given 3–4 weeks apart.
Your puppy will receive the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age during the final booster appointment. These final puppy vaccinations provide protection for one year.
Bordetella is an optional oral vaccine recommended for puppies that will be boarded, attend daycare, receive grooming services, or regularly interact with other dogs in social settings.
What vaccines does my kitten need?
Kittens begin their FVRCP vaccination series at 6–8 weeks of age. Booster vaccinations are administered every 3–4 weeks, with two doses required after the kitten reaches 12 weeks of age.
The Rabies vaccine is administered at 16 weeks of age and provides protection for one year.
While optional, the Feline Leukemia vaccine is highly recommended for cats that go outdoors or may come into contact with other cats.
When do you recommend spaying or neutering?
Spaying female dogs and cats at an early age can help prevent serious health conditions later in life, including uterine infections and mammary (breast) cancer. We typically recommend scheduling the procedure before the first heat cycle, usually between 4 and 6 months of age.
For male pets, neutering can lower the risk of testicular cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland). The procedure can be performed as early as 4 months of age. However, for large and giant-breed dogs, we often advise waiting until they are 12–18 months old.
Allowing additional time before neutering gives sex hormones the opportunity to support proper growth plate closure and complete musculoskeletal development, which may reduce the likelihood of joint issues and certain cancers later in life.
Spaying or neutering will not impact your pet’s intelligence or ability to learn, play, work, or hunt. Many pets also exhibit improved behavior after the procedure, making them even more enjoyable companions and family members.
What do you recommend for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention?
In South Dakota, flea and tick activity generally occurs from April through October, depending on seasonal temperatures and weather patterns. To help protect your pet from parasites and the illnesses they may transmit, we recommend using a flea and tick preventative throughout this period.
Heartworm prevention should be administered year-round, even during the winter months. Heartworm disease can be expensive to treat—often costing more than several years of preventative care—and may result in permanent damage to the heart and lungs.
For pets that stay on heartworm prevention throughout the year, heartworm testing is typically recommended every two years. Pets that receive prevention only during mosquito season should be tested annually.
What do you recommend for dental care to keep my pet’s teeth healthy?
Brushing your pet’s teeth every day is one of the most effective ways to support good oral health. We recommend using a pet-safe toothpaste, such as CET toothpaste, and establishing a dental care routine early to help your pet become accustomed to the process.
Annual oral examinations can help identify when a professional dental cleaning is necessary. Routine cleanings play an important role in preventing dental disease and supporting your pet’s overall well-being.
Additional dental care options are available to help minimize plaque and tartar accumulation, including OraVet dental chews and specially formulated dental diets. Our team can recommend the products that are most appropriate for your pet’s individual needs.
