  The smell in here is SO BAD - smells much worse than a typical pet store smell. It may be the fish area that is the worst but it makes me worry for the health and hygiene of the pets there.

  to be honest with you, I have never been in a PETCO that smelled as bad as that one. I understand there are animals in there, but I have been in many PETCOs and none of them smelled as bad as that Petco

  (If your dog takes medication, especially gabapentin, read this before booking a grooming or nail trim appointment here.) I almost never leave bad reviews, but I think other dog owners should know about this before going through what I did. I spent about 10 minutes on the phone the day before the appointment giving them my information and explaining that I have an anxious but gentle rescue dog. I specifically asked if there was anything I needed to bring or know ahead of time. I was told to bring proof of his rabies vaccine. I even described the paperwork I had from his last vet visit, which showed his name, the date and that he received a 3 year rabies vaccine, and was told that would be fine. When we arrived, my dog was terrified. He was shaking, had his tail pressed against his stomach and was so scared that he peed on the floor. They would not accept the document because his name and the vaccine information were on different pages. Ok, fine. I took him back to the car, called his vet and got the official certificate within a couple minutes. Then I had to get my now even more frightened dog out of the car and bring him inside again. After all of that, they asked if he took any medications. I told them he takes prozac and gabapentin, and only then was I told that Petco will not accept dogs that take gabapentin. I understand that employees have to follow company policy. My problem is that gabapentin is a very commonly prescribed medication and this should have been asked during the phone intake. I had specifically asked if there was anything else I needed to know. Beyond corporate policies, what honestly bothered me most was the complete lack of concern for my dog. Other customers walking by immediately noticed how scared he was and reacted sympathetically to him. Meanwhile, the person who was supposed to be trusted with handling and grooming him showed no concern that he was shaking, had urinated from fear and had been brought inside twice because of incorrect information from their own employee. When I said they should tell people about this ahead of time, the response was basically just “Okay.” No apology for giving me incorrect information and no acknowledgment of what my already anxious dog had just been put through. By the time I left, even if their policy had allowed them to trim his nails, I would not have felt comfortable leaving him in this person’s care. When your dog is that scared, you need to feel like the person handling him actually sees that and cares about making the experience easier for him. I did not get that feeling at all. If your dog takes gabapentin or any other anxiety medication, make sure you ask about it before making an appointment. Apparently Petco does not think to tell people about this policy themselves. Edit: I appreciate the owner response and the acknowledgment that this should have been communicated upfront. Since this policy means I cannot use your grooming services, I’m not sure a phone call with me would accomplish much. I hope the store instead addresses this directly with the grooming department, especially since other recent reviews describe very similar experiences involving vaccination paperwork, anxiety medications, wasted appointments and no apology from the staff.

  I had a very disappointing experience at Petco. The blonde cashier was extremely rude and made me feel like I was a bother for simply coming to the register to check out. When I approached the register, she asked for my phone number in a way that came across as annoyed. I told her I wasn’t sure whether I had an account, and instead of being helpful, she rudely asked me again. I even smiled and tried to be friendly by asking how her day was going, and she responded rudely that she was tired. I understand that everyone has bad days, but customers shouldn’t be made to feel like an inconvenience because an employee is tired or unhappy to be at work. I left feeling very uncomfortable and unwelcome. I will not be returning if this employee is working. I expect basic courtesy and professionalism when I’m spending my money at a store.
