I recently got two lizards from this store and enrolled in the premier plan. My lizards and initial tank needs were good but everything else has been bad. The employee that helped us was very unhelpful and seemed like she just didn’t care at all about doing her job or providing care that feels like more than the bare minimum, specifically saying “I could go to the office and get these papers, but I don’t really feel like it unless you absolutely need them”. She also offered us to enroll in the Premier Pet care plan, after stating that if we don’t like it, we’re able to cancel it whenever we please. This is however not the case. The premier plan was not even worth it, as the quality of lizard food was usually not good when compared to other local stores like Pet Supplies Plus. When I went to cancel my plan, I wasn’t able to turn off auto renew and had to call support. Furthermore, I found out that turning off auto renew doesn’t fix my problem, as I am still being charged monthly and upon contacting support, they said that I have it locked in for a year and cannot get out of paying the monthly fee (even though I was told I could cancel it anytime by the employee).
Our local State College Petco is mediocre already, and this was the nail in the coffin for me. Not only do I have distrust with the employees there now but have to pay a subscription I do not use for an entire year (~$100+) because of their lack of care/knowledge. I suggest staying away from here and shopping at Pet Supplies Plus, as they’ve always been much more reliable, trustworthy, and overall caring of their job/animals.

I came into Petco intending to purchase two birds. I spent a few minutes calmly observing them to see which ones I connected with and which interacted well. During that time, the employee (Debbie) managing the area became visibly irritated with me for simply looking. She stood nearby huffing and puffing, clearly impatient, which made the experience uncomfortable.
At one point, she stomped her foot and told me in a very degrading tone to come get her when I decided what I wanted. Once I had made my decision, I went to find her as instructed. She was helping other customers, so I respectfully stood several feet back to avoid interrupting, just making my presence known.
Instead of acknowledging that, she loudly snapped at me in front of other customers, saying, “Ma’am, I will be with you when I’m done. You need to be patient.” This was embarrassing and completely uncalled for, especially since I wasn’t doing anything to rush or interrupt her.
When she finally came over, I calmly explained that I was just waiting respectfully. She responded by claiming she had been watching me and that I was “taking too long” and “on my phone,” as if that justified her behavior. I was on my phone getting information about what supplies I would need for the birds—something any responsible pet owner would do.
On top of that, she was very forceful about pushing specific brands, consistently steering me toward the most expensive options even when there were clearly cheaper alternatives for the same type of bird and purpose. When I asked about those other options, she dismissed them entirely, telling me they weren’t good and even going as far as to say that choosing them would make me an irresponsible pet owner. That was completely out of line. I understand upselling is part of the job, but this felt excessive and uncomfortable. I felt pressured to spend nearly five times more on products I didn’t need just to end the interaction. It also raises the question why is Petco selling products that their own employees claim are not safe or suitable for the animals they sell?
The entire experience was unnecessarily rude, unprofessional, and uncomfortable. I used to come to this location every couple of weeks for my other pets, but after this experience, I will not be returning. This experience has completely mortified me.
