  I literally walked in and saw one axolotl eating another. Another customer pointed it out, and to the employee’s credit, they immediately removed the deceased axolotl from the other’s mouth. Unfortunately, the rest of the visit wasn’t much better. At checkout, there was no line, so we walked straight to the register, but an employee told us, with an attitude, that we had to “go back around” through the store’s maze instead of simply checking us out. What bothered me most, though, was the condition of the animals. Seeing an axolotl left in that situation was extremely upsetting, especially knowing it was preventable. Axolotls of different sizes should never be housed together due to the risk of injury, and they require specific care that includes appropriate temperatures and lighting. Neither of which were met. The axolotls I’ve seen in these stores since their introduction have consistently appeared severely underweight and unhealthy. And never last long. The bettas and many of the other fish also appeared to be in very poor condition. Nearly every time I’ve visited, I’ve seen fish that looked visibly sick, stressed, or in need of immediate care. It is incredibly disappointing to see living animals treated this way and gives the impression that they are being treated as merchandise rather than animals requiring proper care. Combined with the unfriendly interaction at checkout, this repeated experience has left a very poor impression. I will not be supporting this or other Petco stores unless I see meaningful improvements in animal care standards and customer service.

  I really like the Petco in Exeter. They go above and beyond to help. I would like to thank all the store associates working there.

  As I was at checkout I saw the groomers on their phone for several minutes while a dog was tied to the table. It was restless yet she never looked at the dog she continued on her phone. And you may ask yourself why are people saying I would never bring my dog to Petco to be groomed. And I personally would never bring my dogs there either.
