For many years, my family trusted La Pine Animal Clinic with the care of our cats. Under Drs. Pickering, we consistently received compassionate, dependable care and were loyal clients who always paid our bills promptly.
That changed on July 21, 2026.
Our longtime cat, Abraham, had been treated at the clinic for thyroid disease for about a year. When his condition became critical, my 87-year-old mother called seeking an emergency appointment because she believed he might not survive the day. She was told the clinic does not provide emergency services and that she should drive nearly 40 miles to Bend, or wait until the following day. She explained there might not be a tomorrow for him.
After I called to explain the situation and our family's long history with the clinic, we received the same answer. Then, only minutes later, the clinic called back and told my mother to bring Abraham in after all.
The veterinarian who cared for Abraham was compassionate and professional, and a staff member sincerely apologized for what had happened. We are grateful to both of them.
Sadly, Abraham was suffering from a kidney mass, and we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. What made that terrible day even more painful was having to plead for care before the clinic finally agreed to see a longtime patient in obvious distress.
To add to the frustration, after my brother paid the bill, I immediately received another billing email for charges that had already been paid. While likely an administrative mistake, it reflected the lack of attention our family experienced that day.
My criticism is not of the veterinarian who treated Abraham, but of the front-office handling of an obvious emergency. After many years as loyal clients, we no longer feel confident entrusting our pets to this clinic and have decided to seek veterinary care elsewhere. I hope this review helps other pet owners make an informed decision.

I have taken my dog in for 2 dental cleanings over the last 2 years. He is currently 6 years old. The first cleaning they extracted 6 teeth. This time around I get the first call that 2 to 3 teeth were being extracted and then the second call I was told 13 were extracted! And that a few of them were extracted only because they were sideways.
Also, I have medications for gabapentin and carprofen and they were mislabeled and in the wrong bottles! I had to google what the pills looked like to confirm they were incorrect. So I double dosed my dog with gabapentin thinking I gave him a carprofen.
I also filled out paperwork requesting no nail trim during the dental "cleaning" since I just trimmed them 2 days prior. They cut them too short and made him bleed on 6 toes that I can see.
