We've taken our poodle to Petco for grooming many times before. She's handled every appointment well, and we've always trusted the process. You book a time, you arrive, they take care of your dog. That trust is what makes me write this. The sequence of what happened today is hard to look past. We showed up at 1pm for our scheduled appointment. The groomer, Shay, was still working on another dog. As we waited, we tried to give clear instructions about the cut, but the energy was dismissive from the very beginning. Despite the clear time mismanagement and poor communication from the start. I let the process continue, assuming she would get it right once she had the time. The cut was going to take three and a half hours. It did. When we went back in to pick her up around 4:20pm, the incompetence became even clearer. As the groomer talked to us, trying to explain or perhaps justify the incredibly shaken state of our dog, she started referring to my clearly female dog as a "he." She did it six or seven times in a row. It really confuses me how you can have your hands all over a dog, shaving and handling it for hours, and not know its gender. If you work with animals for a living, that should be basic. The groomer told me to leave so our dog would calm down.. a moment that should have been enough to tell me something was deeply wrong By the time we were notified the grooming was complete around 4:30pm, the dog that walked out to us was not the same one that left at 1pm. She was visibly shaken, exhausted, unable to stand on her own. She collapsed right there on the Petco floor. Before I know it I'm walking out to my car with my hands full of worry. She collapsed again in the parking lot, and again into the saddest puddle in the car. (Not even the pupcup on the way home could lift this poor girl's spirits.) The phone call on the way home, asking us if we'd actually paid, felt lazy (maybe try talking to the cashiers first.. ), disrespectful, and most of all, like an admission of guilt. By the time we got home, I could see the divots EVERYWHERE. Clearly rushed. Careless. No one ever communicated to tell us something had gone wrong during the cut, outside of having to shave her snout. The groomer's only response when speaking about it was, "That's the best we could do." That's when I spoke with Nicole, the manager. Her first words were, "What do you want? A refund?" The tone alone told me everything. But what followed was worse. When I explained that my dog had been traumatized, something a casual observer can see in her body language.. she said, "Dogs can't communicate with you." It took me a long moment to find my voice. As a manager of a grooming business, that is not just wrong. It is professionally insulting. Understanding a dog's body language is the foundation of the job. If you don't read it, you're not doing your job. She also made it a point to tell me several times that this issue would "come out of Shay's pay." Not the store. Not the management. The employee's paycheck. Weaponizing a subordinate's livelihood to make me feel guilty for holding people accountable is a level of manipulation I didn't expect from a store manager, and it tells you exactly what the culture here is like. Eventually, after more calls, I received a 50% refund from "the big bosses." It's something. But money doesn't undo the stress I put my dog through, or the fact that a routine grooming appointment became a traumatic experience for an animal who has been well-cared for many times before. I'm leaving this review because I want other dog owners to know: this isn't just about a bad haircut. It's about the people who are supposed to understand animal care, and who clearly don't. It's about a management team that hides behind payroll threats instead of addressing the root problem. And it's about a place that once earned my trust, which I now have to question every single time I walk through the door. I would avoid this location. Your dog deserves better than indifference.

My dog was sent home in pain with an actively bleeding toe. He had been at the groomers 2+ hours. The dog bled all over the front seat of our car, down the tile hallway at our home and in our bedroom. We do not plan to ever return.
