I am a frequent customer at this Petco location and actually go out of my way to shop here, driving over 20 minutes because the staff has always been friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. This is one of my favorite Petco locations specifically because of the employees and customer service.
However, during my recent visit I was extremely disappointed and honestly disturbed by a new display labeled “Desk Pets” featuring spiders and frogs being marketed almost like novelty impulse items.
These are live animals, not decorations or toys.
The display itself appears unstable and inappropriate for housing live animals. The enclosures are sitting on what looks like a temporary cardboard/paper display in a high-traffic area that is easily accessible to the public, including children. This creates an obvious safety and welfare concern. A child can easily grab, shake, drop, or mishandle these containers.
Beyond the placement issue, the enclosures themselves appear to lack basic husbandry necessities. Amphibians such as frogs require consistent access to clean, dechlorinated water, humidity regulation, temperature stability, and secure hiding spaces to reduce stress. Frogs are highly sensitive animals with permeable skin, meaning improper humidity, sanitation, and handling can quickly lead to dehydration, stress, or illness.
Tarantulas and jumping spiders also require species-appropriate setups with environmental enrichment, proper substrate, secure anchor points/hides, and low-stress placement. Housing them in brightly lit, constantly disturbed retail impulse displays is not aligned with responsible exotic animal care.
Marketing live animals as “desk pets” minimizes the level of care these animals actually require and encourages impulse purchases from people who may not understand their needs. It sends the message that these are simple novelty items instead of living creatures requiring long-term commitment and proper husbandry.
As someone who supports Petco and regularly shops here, this was genuinely upsetting to see. This is not a criticism of the staff at this location, who have always been wonderful. My concern is directed toward whoever approved this corporate merchandising decision.
Please reconsider and remove or redesign this display to prioritize animal welfare and customer safety. Animals should never be treated like trendy accessories or checkout impulse buys.
