My latest experience at Petco in Selden, on 5/5/26 My wife & I stopped in looking to purchase a hermit crab for our niece. My wife came across Chris by the aquariums & politely asked if they had hermit crabs & where they are located. He raised his head from his reading material & responded to her in a “bothersome” manner, “yes” and directed her towards the crabs. Being the bubbly kindergarten teacher my wife is, she shrugged off his poor tone, thanked him & headed towards the crabs. We gathered the habitat and food and picked out a hermit crab from the tank. I headed back to the aquarium section to find Chris to assist us in retrieving the crab but couldn’t locate him. Being the store is large, my wife & I split up and searched the every isle trying to locate another employee. Eventually I stopped by the front & asked the cashier if there was anyone available to give us a hand with the crabs. She informed me Chris was on the floor & was in the back left corner. I waited up front for a minute or so thinking she was going to page someone but when that didn’t happen I went & search again where she said w/ no luck. I headed back to the crab tank assuming by now my wife must have located someone. As I reached her, she had just come across another male employee who she asked to assist her, he politely replied he could not since he was on break. With that I went searching again. Still having no luck I went back to my wife where she informed me Chris had come back but now he was on the phone assisting a customer, we presume. He said to my wife he’d be with her in a minute. Figuring they may be short staffed, she replied no problem & continued to wait. After an additional 15 minutes or so I headed back up the cashier & noticed Chris was off the phone but now, he was assisting in the grooming area. I informed the cashier we were still waiting & it now seems Chris was helping in grooming. She informed me Chris had told her earlier he needed a minute. So I asked the young lady if there was anyone else available to help us. This is when she said, “Chris was the only one who is allowed to retrieve a hermit crab out of the tank”. Thinking I may have misunderstood her, I asked, “Chris is the only employee allowed to get the hermit crabs?”Unbeknownst to me, Chris had existed the grooming area & overheard me, and responds, “Yes I’m the only one able to get the crabs”, let’s just say it he didn’t say it in a pleasant tone. With that we headed to the hermit crabs & I informed Chris we had been waiting for quite awhile, at least 15 minutes. He’s response was, “no you haven’t it’s only been 5 minutes, you can’t wait 5 minutes?” I responded, “it absolutely wasn’t 5 minutes & a bit of communication would have been nice”. My wife informed him in the 1st 30 seconds of being in the store she wanted a hermit crab. Then he replied something, I don’t remember what exactly but I could see the conversation was going down hill so I said “whatever let’s just get the hermit crabs” This is when Chris stopped in his tracks and said to me. “No I’m not getting you the hermit crab, I’m refusing you service”. I was so taken back I responded, “you’re serious? You’re refusing for what reason? Because I don’t want to have an argument with you in Petco over a hermit crab and I said the horrible word, Whatever ?”. I could understand if i used fowl language or made a scene but this was absolutely ridiculous. I left off by telling him how rude & unprofessional he was being and should be ashamed. I hope they have cameras with sound so the owner can see & hear how unprofessional he was. The most shocking part is I was informed on the way out Chris is a manager! A manager with zero people skills & professionalism & a bad attitude. Unfortunate, we’ve been shopping there for ages but after this we won’t be back. Oh and btw, the staff at PetSmart by the mall in Lake Grove, Fantastic! Extremely kind and helpful, and I’m not just saying that. Anyway, if you made it this far, sorry it was so long winded. Thanks!
