Edit: Petco has processed my return as of 06/16, so I am updating my review to 3 stars for the prompt attention to the matter. Thank you! Minus 2 stars for the associate's lack of sympathy for selling me dead/dying fish. Petco should not be selling sick/dead fish to customers without disclosing the condition of said fish during the initial inquiry. If the fish being requested (or any animal being purchased, for that matter) is not in optimal health at the time of purchase, Petco should not sell said animal(s) nor should they make the customer feel bad for not being satisfied with their purchase. -- Original Review: Bought two loaches yesterday and they didn’t even make the 15 minute drive before one was dead and the other was fighting for its life. I drove all the way back to return the fish (in the same bag they came in), and while the man tending the register took my receipt to “process the return” he told me to bring the dead fish back to aquatics and they’ll handle it. I walked to the back to let the associates know, and the lady who sold me the fish took the bag from me and made a face like I just ruined her day. Despite the circumstances, I thanked her and I apologized for the inconvenience, and she completely ignored me while she walked to the back. The man tending the register was doing something else, so I assumed he processed the return. Silly me for not sticking around to make sure he actually processed the return, because I checked my account and the return was in fact not processed. Each loach was $6.99, and while $11.98 might be pocket change to some people, I did not get what I purchased — therefore, I want my money back. Petco has always been my go-to for aquatics, but after this last experience, y’all have lost my business. Especially after making it seem like it was my fault I was sold sick/dead fish. If the owner reads these reviews, please check the cameras and see that I came back into the store around 3:15pm on Monday 6/15/26 with the bag in hand. I stopped at the register first, then made my way towards the back of the store where 3 associates were chatting amongst each other before asking if I needed assistance. I did not get the name of the reps who “helped” me. The man at the register took my receipt, but I have the record on my Vital Care Rewards account. Receipt ID is 174395. Please advise.

Petco isn't what it used to be. Customer service is disappointing. When attempting to exchange a fish that passed away, I was told i was required to provide a water sample first. But I feel its incredibly hypocritical given the store's own tank conditions. Multiple tanks on display consistently contain dead fish and show a severe lack of basic cleaning and maintenance. It is unreasonable to hold customers to a standard of care that the store itself fails to meet.

Cameron was incredibly helpful!!! She walked me through purchases for my bearded dragon for almost 20 minutes while I asked a million questions and was nonjudgmental, despite my admittance that our setup isn’t very good (improvement in progress). She helped me pick out the correct food and made much better suggestions than what I could find in my own research. Everything online is so contradictory. I really appreciated her service and I feel much safer about my purchases! :)

Do not visit this Petco if you are shopping for reptiles. I usually go to Petsmart for my worms, but decided to try Petco. Big mistake. I paid dang near $10 for a 50 pack of super worms (typical pricing, fine). I understand they are sold by weight, but when I count them out, there is usually at least 40 no doubt. I got home and counted out the worms, noticing a lot of black dead worms. By the time I got to the bottom, I didn't even count 25 worms. Again, I never go to Petco and therefore do not have a phone number with them. I called to ask how I should go about getting a refund, and they asked me to bring them back in... after I had already counted them out into my own bin (which I explained)... for an exchange.... not sure how that was supposed to work. I then saw the date on the tub, which said 4/21, three weeks from the day I bought them. The container had holes on the top of it, but the lid was sealed with tape, covering many of the holes, I assume many of the worms were dead. The associate on the phone was pleasant until they just started telling me "we price them by weight" over and over again. I told them I would not be coming back, and they got loud with me over the phone, in which I quickly hung up because no, we aren't gonna do that. Do not visit this Petco, go down the street 3 more minutes to the PetSmart, which has never failed me. Must've been my fault for trying something new.
