- AKAmanda KatkoJun 13, 20251.0I visited the Edison Petco and purchased three “colored” tetras that had been dyed. Within a very short time, the fish became ill—two of them developed severe bloating and sadly died, and the third was in such poor condition that I ultimately had to humanely euthanize it. It appears the dye-injection practice severely compromised their health. I understand fish can be fragile, but the rapid decline suggests these dyed tetras were especially vulnerable. I had set up and cycled my aquarium properly, so I believe the problem stemmed from the way the fish were treated prior to sale. I was disappointed, as I expected healthier livestock when buying from a reputable store. I did not receive a warning about potential health issues associated with dyed fish at purchase. I hope Edison Petco will reconsider offering dyed tetras or at least inform customers about the known risks, so hobbyists can make an informed decision. If you’re looking for healthy community fish, I would advise avoiding dyed varieties. I appreciate any follow-up from the store on their sourcing and animal welfare practices. Thank you.
