Our elderly dog is a regular patient at Smithfield Road Veterinary Hospital. My husband took her in for an annual exam in early June. He mentioned to them that she had just developed a cough. They gave him a prescription (listed only as "cough tabs" on the invoice,) said she had a heart murmur and gave a referral for a cardiologist. Near the end of June, she got into a squirrel and then vomited and pooped in the house for two nights. When she refused to eat and couldn't seem to poop, we feared a blockage and my husband took her back. They performed an anal gland expression and declared no blockage. They said her heart murmur was worse. Only when they put through a refill for the "cough tabs" did we realize that this was a medication for heart disease. (There was no info on the original bottle.) They advertise themselves as a full service animal hospital so I'm not sure why they wanted her to see a cardiologist when they had, apparently, already diagnosed her with heart disease and prescribed treatment. I also can't understand why they didn't discuss their diagnosis with my husband. Our last dog had congestive heart failure but coughing wasn't a symptom so we didn't put it all together at first...and should we have to? To make matters worse, I just got off a chat with Covetrus because I ordered the refill prescription for the "cough tabs" and it's still under review 5 days later. I thought I'd have it by now. The person I chatted with said there was a problem with the prescription and they had reached out to Smithfield but received no response. I asked if it had to do with the dosage because I just received another email from Smithfield this morning telling me there was a prescription ready. It was for the same med but 5mg instead of 10mg. He said yes, that was it and they could cancel the order for the 10 mg and put through the new one. No explanation from Smithfield; again, I had to figure it out for myself. Communication and compassion are definitely lacking at Smithfield Road Veterinary Hospital, I've seen this expressed in other reviews as well.

We have been taking our kitties to this veterinary clinic for some years now and recently I feel like the service is just not the same. I brought in a stray for a check up and vaccination.
The veterinarians were very kind and sweet, however, they told me the cat had not had its first heat yet and she was free of parasites, we gave stool samples and everything. A month later her stomach started to grow and I thought she was just getting fat, turns out she was pregnant, and on top of that we saw tapeworm segments in her stool. ( she was kept inside after the vet so I’m not sure how she would get a tapeworm inside)
I took one of my other cats here as well to get an annual check up in January and they gave her a rabies vaccine and a few months later she developed feline injection site sarcoma and she is scheduled to get her hind leg amputated.
I’m just disappointed in our recent visits to this clinic and very upset with the results. I just wish they were more thorough with our kitties. I understand that FISS is a very rare type of cancer and it might not be the vets fault but considering our other cat (the pregnant stray), I feel like that case could have gone better.
We now have 5 unexpected kittens and mama is housing a tapeworm, and we are about to amputate the leg of my other cat.
Another case, my sister took her cat a few years ago because she was covered in fleas. She received a shot and the next day she was lying under the bed extremely lethargic, took her to the vet and they told us that she probably ingested something in the house, when we were very sure there was nothing in the house that the kitty could ingest and cause that kind of reaction. (She’s fine now but she had to stay overnight in the clinic under an iv and it was very scary)
Do what you want with this information. Unfortunately, I don’t think I will be coming back here.

The Old Guard is gone guys. I'm not sure what has happened to this practice in the last few years but I'm sure I will not be coming back again. I understand that being a veterinarian is a difficult and stressful job but if you lack empathy, caring and understanding you should just go ahead and quit.
I had an terrible experience with my two dogs. When I booked my two dogs for an appointment I expressed that I only need a nail grind for one dog and an exam, rabies and nail grind for the other. The technician was rude when she walked into the room. She did not introduce herself and just handed me two pieces of paper with estimates for services I did not ask for. I was also not made aware that they charge $67 in addition to a nail trim. That's ridiculous for a dog that is up-to-date on rabies.
The technician made me feel bad because one of my dogs is very old and has two tumors on his spleen. I have elected to forgo surgery due to his advanced age and what a major medical procedure would do to his quality of life. It's a difficult decision but I want my dude to live out his life at home in peace. I'm fully prepared for what is coming and this woman almost had me in tears because she made me feel like a bad owner. She shamed me and said that HER dog went through the same thing and now he's fine. That's awesome for her but that's not my situation. I hope her pet lives a long happy life. I'm sure she also got a major discount for her pets surgery as well.
When the doctor, Dr. Prucell, came in she was rude, rude, rude. She also did not introduce herself. She came in HOT and said I cannot get a nail trim without an exam. I had already accepted this but they seemed weirdly upset with me. She said "what if your dog has a blood disease. I can't tell without an exam." Doctor, you do not need blood work for a physical exam. Please stop trying to steal my money. This practice's prices have also gone up significantly. An exam used to cost $55, now it is $67. Rabies used to cost $27, now it is $40.
I'm sorry this review is so long but I wanted you all to know my experience. Smithfield Road Vet has gone down hill and if they keep this going I can't imagine they'll still be standing in a few years. And pro-tip. If a veterinary office is calling YOU to set up an appointment that means they're business is doing so well.
The receptionist was the only kind person on staff today. Dr. Purcell and her assistant should take a page from her.
