I brought my 16-year-old dog Harley in after he fell down the stairs and dislocated his hip. As a pet owner walking into an emergency specialty clinic under those circumstances, I was scared and emotional — and the team at Carolina Veterinary Specialists met me exactly where I was.
Dr. Cambrie Dalton was thorough, honest, and incredibly reassuring. She didn't dismiss Harley because of his age — she told me age is not a diagnosis and treated him with the same urgency and care she would any other patient. The closed reduction was successful and I am so grateful.
But I also want to specifically recognize Ashley, who handled Harley's discharge. She was one of the most genuine, knowledgeable, and empathetic people I have encountered in a veterinary setting. In what was an already difficult and emotional day, she took the time to make sure I understood everything, answered every question with patience and warmth, and made me feel like Harley was in the right hands from start to finish.
This team is exceptional. I hope I don't need to come back — but if I do, I know Harley is in good hands.
Brought my dog in who was vomiting and had diarrhea to the point that I was starting to be concerned. The staff took great care of her and loved her. They ran bloodwork, ruled out any serious issues, and we were sent home with the diagnosis of GI inflammation and meds to help treat it.
I’m genuinely baffled by the negative reviews for this facility because I had nothing but a good experience from the time I called ahead (special shoutout to April at the front desk for her kindness and patience) to the time I left. Also huge shoutout to Dr. Coartney for taking the time to help answer any questions and address any concerns and was very honest and transparent about my dog’s treatment plan. She reviewed with me what she doesn’t think is necessary and why.
The only downside of the clinic is of course the high cost, and a little bit of a long wait but obviously that’s to be expected so it’s not detrimental. I would for sure recommend CVS to anyone and will make sure this is my #1 emergency vet hospital as long as I live in this area.
We brought our dog to Carolina Veterinary Specialists this Sat for sudden lameness/injury to his leg. They recommended we call a surgeon at a different surgical center first thing Monday as they felt additional diagnostic tests were needed. We called the surgeon first thing Monday as directed but they said Carolina Veterinary Specialists needed to have sent over a referral and had not done so. Disappointed this hasn’t been done and waiting with a lame dog, we called Carolina Veterinary Specialists back. At this point they had critical cases so we had to wait. They finally called us back to say the surgeon we saw this weekend was out until Wednesday and we had to wait until he got back to write the referral? Honestly mystified by this. Waiting five days after visit just to be able to book an appointment at the new surgeon is absolutely unacceptable. At human doctors offices the support staff can send a referral. Fair to say post service follow ups are not in place here. Had we known we needed a referral to see the new surgeon we wouldn’t have left without it. We are so angry and disappointed on behalf of our dog.
This comment is regarding an experience from 2-3 years ago, yet the experience still brings my mom a lot of pain.
I don’t know if the same vets who supervised my dog still work here. But because this comment also pertains to the overall experience, I think it is relevant.
My dog came in for issues regarding a disease that was starting to affect her blood health. Now whether or not, she would have lived a couple years more, I do not know. But, I do know that she did not have to suffer a severe seizure that left her practically brain dead within the first 24 hours of submitting her to this facility. When asked if they had given her (my dog) her seizure medication they asked, “ What seizure medication?”. It’s about $5000 to admit a dog for a week here (2023) . She passed away within the 24 hour mark. I find it odd the $5000 disappeared after one day. Couple this with not being able to have her dog collar for six month since they lost it.
I sincerely hope that since 2023 this vet clinic has upped their standards. That they hold themselves with integrity and are able to remember and keep count of the medications an animal should take and their belongings if they should pass away.
Thank you for your time and for reading this comment to all those who are wondering if this is a place they should submit their animals to.

Last night we had a medical emergency with our dog, Oliver, who was bleeding relentlessly. We called ahead and were told by the front desk representative, Casey, that the total time from arrival to discharge would be approximately 3–5 hours; not just the wait to be seen.
Unfortunately, our experience was far from that expectation. We were there for over six hours, and it wasn’t until I called to request that our dog be released that any meaningful action was taken regarding stopping the bleeding.
Despite letting our dog Oliver bleed out for over six hours, what was most concerning was the level of care during our visit. At one point, Oliver had an accident, and despite staff being informed, he was left sitting on a floor soaked with his own urine and blood for hours. My partner who was with him the entire time, even offered to clean it up himself, but was never provided any tools to do so. They had to sit in a small room smelling of blood and urine everywhere for over six hours. That is not acceptable for any patient, especially one in distress.
Communication throughout the entire process was extremely poor. We received little to no updates, and no clear guidance on what was happening or why there were delays.
After more than six hours of waiting while our dog continued to bleed, the doctor finally came in. Instead of urgency or compassion, we were met with a suggestion of euthanasia and comments that Oliver appeared “dull and lethargic.” Of course he was; he had been bleeding for hours and it was the middle of the night. The lack of empathy and bedside manner was incomprehensible.
To make matters worse, when I called today to request records, I was informed by the Front Desk representative who informed me that she “just worked there on the weekends“ told that Dr.Dalton had left the night before without completing clinical notes, or visit narrative . Despite paying over $1,300 for x-rays, labs, and prescriptions, we were refused copies of records and radiographs because Dr.Dalton failed to complete prior to her departure from her shift.
This level of disorganization, lack of accountability, and disregard for patient care is deeply concerning. Although I am waiting to hear back from the hospital manager, Vincent Owens. In the meantime, I wanted to desperately share that I would strongly advise others to avoid this facility and take your loved ones to a facility that cares.
