I am reconsidering my support of Petco because of its involvement in the animal-welfare and shelter system. The case of Major, a service dog who was taken into custody by Austin Animal Services and has been the subject of a prolonged legal fight over euthanasia, has made me look much more closely at these relationships. Austin Animal Services publicly identifies Petco Love Lost as its official lost-and-found pet reporting tool, and Petco publicly promotes its partnerships with animal-welfare organizations through Petco Love. Petco and Lowe’s also have a formal partnership bringing Petco products and services into select Lowe’s stores. I want companies that profit from the trust of pet owners to be demanding transparency and accountability from the animal-welfare organizations they support. Major’s case is particularly disturbing to me because he is a service dog, and his case raises serious questions about what happens to animals once they enter municipal shelter custody and how decisions affecting their lives are made. People are paying much closer attention to the animal shelter industry and asking difficult questions about transparency, accountability, euthanasia practices, and conflicts within the system. Petco may not have made the decision involving Major, but companies that financially or organizationally support the broader animal-welfare system have a responsibility to ask hard questions about how that system operates. I hope Petco will take cases like Major’s seriously and demand meaningful transparency from the organizations and programs it supports. As a pet owner, these issues affect where I choose to spend my money.

Great selection and good prices. The employees were very helpful and assisted me in getting everything for my new cat! Food, beds, toys, litter, and even a great variety of cat towers and scratching posts. The rewards program is easy to get started, which is great, because I will definitely be coming back frequently
