James River Animal Hospital is a place I've taken my pets to for years. They are very sweet, caring, staff. It's a very small town feel to it, not a "sterile hospital" setting. I like that it's like that though, and not like a busy, rushing around, medical building. It's welcoming. I believe they are fairly short staffed, in that they seem to have a regular set of staff, and so they don't have a ton of staff. I believe it is only the one veterinarian, and usually we have the same (very sweet, kind, and personable) nurse. The front staff is usually just busy, which is to be expected.
Overall, I feel they've done well with my animals over the years. I've taken several and different types of exotic pets to them, and they're great with them each time.
Recently we'd taken our bird there, and he was pretty sick. He ended up passing away the following day - but I can hardly place any blame at all on James River Animal Hospital with regards to it, because I think he was just sick, and it happened really quickly. They tried to help and gave him some pain medication, so I hope that helped him in his last hours. However, there's no telling if anything would have ever helped him survive. I believe they did what they knew to do.
I was wondering what their thoughts on what might be going on with him, specifically were - but that wasn't communicated, so his death caught me off guard.
I am in no way blaming them for anything - and appreciate all they've done for my pets. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish I could have heard more communication about what might be going on, what we might expect, etc...
Other than that, I do recommend them and think they do a great job.

Little Budgie wasnt feeling well, it's hard seeing something so small be checked out but they made it feel less of a scare. We got sent off with some care instructions and some pain meds after they did a quick nail clipping.
Receptionist/assistant that checked us in was real sweet and made conversation, it was also nice to see how they treated our little bud at intake.

Doctor Hardy is amazing! He really cares about pets and it shows. I had an issue with my Yorkie and he went above and beyond to help me out, when no one else would. I almost cried I am so thankful for him! Thank you Doctor Hardy!

I’m honestly pretty disappointed with my experience here. I brought my bearded dragon in to get established as a new patient and to address a few concerns I had.
The office didn’t feel very clean, including the seating area, which already made me uneasy going in. We also waited around 45 minutes to be seen even though there weren’t many people there.
Once we were finally brought back, my dragon was placed in a container that didn’t look clean, which immediately stressed her out even more. I also wasn’t comfortable with how she was handled during the exam, it felt a bit rough and not as gentle as I would expect for a reptile.
On top of that, I didn’t feel like my concerns were really taken seriously and a lot of it felt brushed off as normal.
The front desk staff were kind, and the prices are reasonable, but based on my experience I personally wouldn’t recommend this place for reptiles.
UPDATE: I got a second opinion after being told my bearded dragon was “perfectly fine.” At the new clinic, my concerns were taken seriously and she was started on treatment. I’ve already seen improvement. I felt my concerns were dismissed during my original visit and will be continuing care elsewhere.

They managed to take my snake in on the same day which was great, the wait was a little long but the work was very much worth it! Everyone was kind and understanding which gave the environment a more welcoming energy. Also everything was very nicely priced so i didnt have to break the bank! 10/10 will be visiting again
