That’s Just The Way It Is

Took my cat in yesterday afternoon due to rapid decline in a short amount of time after he received anesthesia to get his mouth evaluated, at Round Lake Companion. This vet put him on IV fluids, did blood work and warmed him up - his temperature was low. The temperature got better. Then the systems shut down. This hindered the vets ability to proceed with care, apparently. He was anemic, his WBC was 41, neutrophil count was 22,xxx. I requested them to give him an IV antibiotic. I am a nurse and I constantly relay labs and orders for patients. They refused to give him the IV antibiotic and said that he needed an anemia panel done - they didn't want the antibiotic to taper the results. So Sox had a delay in care. They also stated they performed CPR, with another employee saying they did not perform CPR. When I stated and signed an agreement that we were all in for treatment - blood transfusion, abdominal u/s, etc, they came to the room a few minutes later to say that Sox only has a few minutes left. Im just confused on why they wouldn't initiate CPR again, why did they not act on his lab results, why was the doctor's name badge turned around, why did they not proceed with care tho the systems were down. There are a lot of why's and I wish we had not chosen this place to bring our innocent 13 year old cat in.

Took very good care of us at 2am. Considering there was a bunch of people there with pets we were able to get tests done, relief and medicine to go home. Really appreciate this place

We brought our young cat here after suffering a stroke just after midnight last Wednesday. We were ultimately transferred to Veterinary Specialty Center (VSC) in Bannockburn (due to Companion’s inability to perform MRIs). We wish we’d been directed to VSC directly based on the information we provided Companion by phone regarding symptoms and our location (an hour from both facilities). Companion’s front desk receptionist was curt and although the vet was kind, we did not feel she demonstrated a high degree of expertise. She seemed directionless, introducing a myriad of possibilities, one grim diagnosis after the next. At one point we were given a paper copy of some years-old blog article. I assume it was meant to be educational, but it gave us the impression Google was guiding care (which only added to lack of confidence). The vet was also quick to present euthanasia as an option despite our cat’s age and, as far as she was concerned, the uncertainty surrounding his condition. At no point did we suggest that was something we wanted to discuss or entertain. We left Companion in an elevated state of fear and anxiety. Within 5 minutes of being admitted at VSC we felt relieved. Equally upsetting was Companion’s transactional approach to care. All roads led to cost. How much were we willing to spend? Because we hurried out of the house without any belongings, we weren’t able to make payment at checkout. Companion immediately began attempting to collect payment although they knew we were en-route to VSC for extended hospitalization. The phone calls and texts were so relentless over the next 24 hours, we had to block their number. Harassing families while they’re actively trying to coordinate care with a pet in the ICU is tactless. Give people 24 hours to get home, get their bearings, and make payment.

I have never hated a facility more. Most of the staff is very nice, but when its life or death nice only goes so far. Twice in my life have i brought my cats here for emergency care and BOTH TIMES they were not only misdiagnosed but died 24 hours later. First cat?? She fell from a tree. They did xrays and told us its dehydration, the second vet?? No she broke several ribs and has been internally bleeding. It had been several years and it was the closest option in an emergency so we hoped maybe the last doctor was gone by now. My last visit??? Brought my boy in because he was losing his ability to walk after a traumatic injury. They told me he has an ear infection and neck pain, after making us wait 6 hours in this hospital to be diagnosed and seen!!! They took another call in of a guy who was here a week ago because his dog ate something, had eaten a baby wipe again, and was actively eating stuff in the waiting room while my cat was sitting there with a possible broken back. They got him in and out while we waited 6 hours!!!!!! Less than 24 hours later my cat gets taken to a different emergency vet because his decline was rapid and it seemed he had a massive stroke caused by the injury they misdiagnosed and waited on and we had to say goodbye to him. NEVER EVER take your pets here!!!! I am telling everyone avoid this place, youre better off diagnosing your animals yourself atp. You will be put off, misdiagnosed, and more than likely waste hundreds of dollars just to go somewhere else to put your animal down that either could have been saved or have been put out of their suffering far sooner. My god i cannot believe this place is still open.

We took our beloved family dog here on New Year’s Eve due to a sudden collapse and unwilling to eat. When we went in the vet said she probably has a specific type of cancer and we may have to start thinking about tough choices-she did an ultra sound it did not show she had this specific type of cancer. That made us very emotional and she shouldn’t have said anything until she was certain it was there. They then passed it off as she had a back injury and gave her pain medication and sent her home. She got severely worse and was completely unresponsive and had to be put down the next morning. There was something so much more serious going on than a back injury and I felt like the vet that was caring for her could have done more. I would never ever come back here again. I Feel like I failed my dog by bringing her here to get care. If you’re looking for an emergency hospital vet go to thrive in Hoffman estates-night and day difference. It’s taken us a long time to heal because we feel like her suffering and pain could’ve been prevented if we just didn’t come here at all and went there from the start.
