Great sale on dog bed but the freeze dried food was sky high. You can get the same brand for way less at other retailers. Shop around

I visited this location today 08/06/2026 and I was not pleased with the way this store has decided to handle its "Desk Pets" display.
Normally, I shop at the PetCo on Buffalo Rd in Clive that has foregone this display because it is innately cruel to the animals (pacman frogs & tarantulas/jumping spiders) to have them out in small, inadequate enclosures on the display. They remove the animals from their corporate-provided enclosures and place them in the inset enclosures in the reptile area which is much more appropriate space-wise and allows the addition of water dishes, hides, and better temperature control. I am also aware of several other stores in the US that have decided to rework their "Desk Pet" displays in this way, and various other ways to reduce the cruelty to animals.
This PetCo has not chosen to do that. When I visited, they had about five pacman frogs in small tupperware-sized enclosures that had coco coir and moss but did not appear to have water dishes. They also had about five tarantulas in the same style enclosure, but only ONE had a small clump of moss, the others just had bare substrate, and not even enough to burrow in. One of the tarantulas had a completely bare abdomen, indicating that it had kicked off all of the urticating hairs which is a very clear sign of a stressed tarantula. Two of the other tarantulas were curled up in corners barely covered by the substrate and their posturing also looked stressed/uncomfortable. There were two jumping spiders on the display, and they did not have any indications of humidity in their enclosures (the moss was bone dry) and both spiders had thin abdomens indicating that they had not been fed recently and were hungry.
I brought up my concerns to an employee (I believe the manager, but I am not completely sure) and I was told that they are "not allowed" to add hides to the display enclosures. This is a lie, and it did not fool me for one second, considering how often I frequent the Clive store I mentioned above. I have seen many, many photos online of these "Desk Pet" displays and even the ones that are still on the display usually have at least a fabric leaf, moss, or a piece of cork. Whether or not a looming corporate entity "allows" it, the welfare of these animals should come first. Keeping a tarantula in a clear box with no soil to burrow in, no hides to take cover in, and no protection from being picked up and shaken by customers (besides a sign advising care when handling the containers) is CRUEL. These animals are not being sold expo-style where the animals are only kept in these enclosures for 24, maybe 48 hours at a time. These animals are on the sales floor 24/7 with no temperature regulation during a record hot summer and absolutely NOTHING to allow them to perform their natural behaviors. There would be animal welfare riots the world over if this kind of treatment was to be applied to a cat or a dog, so why is it acceptable for frogs and spiders? They are not lesser organisms purely just because of what they are. They are living, breathing animals and they should be treated with respect, and that is not what this store is doing.
I did not take pictures or venture into other parts of the store because I was genuinely appalled. I will not be returning to this location and I hope the employees take the initiative to give these animals the care that they deserve.
