TERRIBLE PRACTICE! REPORT REPORT REPORT. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND STREEPER SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE. If I could give this place negative stars to avoid heartbreak for every other person who considers taking their beloved pets to this place, I would. Streeper killed our 17yo cat. Recently, my family made the decision that our 17yo cat Teddy, was starting to decline and it was coming close to his time. As I live out of state, I planned to be home today (8/13/26), so we could all say goodbye to our baby and put him to rest. Unfortunately, Teddy wandered off a few days before I was able to make it home (he started to lose his mind sadly). The family searched night and day, sickened at the thought of him being missing. We posted online on the Facebook page Cedar Rapids animals lost pets immediately. After three heartbreaking days, Dawn Herkelman posted Teddy on the same Facebook page at 4pm - within minutes people were pinging the post tagging my mom saying it was our cat, and we immediately started responding claiming our cat - giving our contact info & trying to reach the woman. Of course, the whole family was SO happy our poor baby was found. Thank god, it was a miracle we couldn’t believe how lucky we felt. However, as soon as this woman posted, she took Teddy straight to be seen by Streeper… she wanted to adopt our 17yo cat & nurse him back to health (which was never going to happen for a 17yo cat, we can all sadly agree). Teddy was of course very old with his aliments as it’s impossible for a cat to live that long without developing some health issues, but overall loved his family, enjoyed his constant snuggles & couldn’t wait for his special treatment 24/7. We knew his health was declining, the signs were there, as we have cared for him for 17 years. Here’s where Streeper practice gets super dicey and questionable - Streeper first said that our baby was a girl, which he was most definitely and always has been a boy. Streeper then sedated our cat trying to diagnosis his sickness to this random woman. Streeper acknowledged that this cat was very old (even admitted to us after these events) and said that he was not going to “get better” which of course, HE WAS 17 YEARS OLD, that’s common sense. Teddys microchip for whatever reason didn’t read back to us, although the humane society said it had registered him to us 17 years ago (imagine our disbelief when we heard this). However, this was very clearly someone’s lost, old cat. Before even checking the Facebook page, before even acknowledging an old cat would more than likely have to have a home as strays don’t live to elderly years, let alone 17 years, Streeper & this random woman decided to KILL our 17yo cat within less 30 minutes. NO ATTEMPT TO FIND THE OWNER. No thought to look at the Facebook post that was posted 30 minutes before (she didn’t even look at the page itself as she would’ve seen a couple scrolls down our post noting Teddy is an old, missing cat). Although Teddy’s story was coming to an end, they made zero effort to find the family (us) to let us say our goodbyes even though we had been frantically trying to contact Dawn who found our cat, we reached out practically immediately after she posted about finding him. As a vet, you would assume they would follow a protocol, if lost pet is not seriously injured to find the family (of a so clearly lost pet). She made an irreversible, grave choice. It is heartbreaking to the family and the fur baby just trying to make its way back to its family. We will never get to tell our baby he was safe, we will never get to give him one last kiss, one last pet & tell him he is not alone, he is with family in the very end. Streeper should step down from her practice as she is clearly not fit to conduct her work with integrity. You can delete this, you can do whatever you want, but in the end you know the choices you made were wrong & when confronted, NOT EVEN A SINGLE APOLOGY was given. You have no empathy. A companion of 17 years… you’d have to be heartless to not understand the grief behind your actions.
