Private Equity Putting Profits Over Pets
I was very disappointed with our visit today however it is not an isolated incident and I would be remiss if I did not inform other pet owners of my experience with Banfield on Hillsborough so they can avoid this money grubbing company.
TLDR: We made an appointment for a prescription refill after we ran out of thyroid med for our American Shorthair when our regular Vet was closed. The woman booking the appointment said nothing about bloodwork and booked us at the end of the day 4:30pmand said he would simply need an exam. When we got there they said they “didnt have time to do the necessary blood work” we instead asked for one additional dose of thyroid med which he’d been prescribed for over a year and they said no after making us wait for 45 mins and all other vets were closed. The vet would have rather him have a thyroid spike than give us one additional dose of meds without running a full gambit of bloodwork.
My Fiancée and I began taking our pets to Banfield Pet Hospital on Hillsborough Ave when we first relocated to the area nearly two years ago. The first few visits were relatively uneventful however it seemed that the visit prices and examination prices were well above other vets in our area.
When I asked why the costs were so high a very pushy woman tried to get us to purchase a care plan which did not make any sort of economical sense.
The time prior to this particular appointment we asked for a refill of our cat’s thyroid medication. They said that it would be no problem we went in and they said they would need to conduct a full visit and bloodwork and bill us nearly $400 before any of the costs for the medication. The medication costs $16 usd on Chewy and they charged us an additional $50 usd. We were told we could not do anything about getting his prescription without the full gambit of tests and begrudgingly paid.
After going to our new vet Animal Dr’s of South Tampa we paid less than $150 for the same tests and the medication.
Today when we got back from out of town our pet sitter didn’t tell us he had run out of medication. Our vet is closed on Sunday.
Since we had been to Banfield before I called and set an appointment knowing it would be more expensive but just needed to get him his meds as he hadn’t had a dose since the evening prior.
The woman on the phone said not a problem he just has to be seen by the vet and they will be happy to refill his prescription she said “NOTHING” about bloodwork or any other tests only that he would need to have a physical exam conducted by the vet.
When we got there it was another story entirely.
We were made for a while before the same woman who had booked our appointment said he would need to have blood work done and since it was so late they did not have time to conduct the tests. I
informed her a time prior when his medication was interrupted our cat had a thyroid spike which caused him to stop eating and nearly killed him.
She said she would “check” to see if the vet will give him one additional pill to get him through until morning.
Eventually after 45 minutes of waiting and explaining the vet came in and was rather short and rude saying “yeah i’m not giving him anything if you’re not paying for bloodwork.” (which they wouldn’t even be able to do that day anyway because it was “too late” even though they set the appointment time.)
I immediately left and called around and drove all over town until finally hours later we arrived at VEG Pet ER in South Tampa who gave him a physical exam, verified the prescription on his pill bottle had us sign a liability release and gave him and additional pill with no problems at all.
They didn’t even charge us for the exam just the medicine. They were so awesome.
Suffice to say if you care about your pet don’t go to Banfield or any other Blue Pearl Run Facilities. They care a lot more about getting sued and charging you as much as they can than giving your pet the care it needs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Banfield Pet Hospital
Does Banfield provide emergency care services?
No, but you can call us during hospital hours for urgent care advice. Depending on the situation, we can help provide a referral for urgent care, specialty providers, or to an emergency hospital. During non-hospital hours, please contact your local emergency hospital.
Can I get veterinary care online?
To help pets and their people stay healthy, Banfield clients who have Optimum Wellness Plans® can get remote general pet care advice and triage support directly from a veterinarian 24/7 through Vet Chat™ on the Banfield app.
What preventive pet health care services does Banfield offer?
We believe that preventive care is the most effective way to keep your pet healthy throughout all stages of life. Our pet hospitals offer many preventive care treatments, including:
• Vaccinations
• Dental Care
• Parasite Control

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
• Optimum Wellness Plans® Virtual Visits: If you have an Optimum Wellness Plan and scheduled a Virtual Visit, you’ll save valuable time and get quality care from the comfort of your home.
