I scheduled this grooming appointment two weeks in advance and specifically selected the highest-level grooming package, which includes both deshedding and dematting services. Despite offering dematting as part of the package, my dog was turned away because the matting on his rear end was considered “too tight” for them to handle. If your groomers are unable to perform dematting beyond a certain point, that limitation should be clearly communicated before the appointment and you should make it a point to call the customer prior to the appointment to discuss the severity. When I booked online, I provided detailed notes explaining that my dog’s matting was primarily on his rear end and that he has anxiety around men. At no point during the two weeks leading up to my appointment did anyone contact me to discuss the severity of the matting or explain that they might not be able to provide the requested service. A simple phone call could have prevented me from making a 1 1/2 hour drive, rearranging my schedule that I made plans for, and wasting both my time and gas. It quickly became obvious that the staff had not reviewed the notes I submitted. During check-in, they seemed surprised to learn about both his anxiety and the matting, even though this information had been provided when I scheduled the appointment. One employee even commented, “Oh, he doesn’t like men? I was going to have this gentleman bathe him.” That information was already specifically documented in my appointment notes. In a professional grooming environment, staff should review a client’s information before they arrive, not discover important details during check-in. Being prepared is a basic expectation, especially when the information has been available for two weeks. Because my dog was turned away, I had to cancel the other plans I had arranged around this appointment. The entire situation could have been avoided with better communication and attention to the information I had already provided. If a business offers specialized services like dematting, it should clearly communicate its limitations with clients prior to the appointment and thoroughly review client information before appointments. Customers deserve better communication and better preparation than what I experienced. UPDATE: After the incredible grooming experience we just had at the Northeast Animal Hospital, I’m even more frustrated and disappointed with how Petco handled the situation. Their assessment was completely inaccurate and showed a concerning lack of knowledge. When I picked my dog up from the groomer at the veterinary clinic, she asked why Petco had refused to groom him. I explained that they told me the matting on his rear was “too tight” for them to handle. She was genuinely shocked and said, “There’s no way! He was hardly even matted.” Turns out he only had two small dreadlock-like knots between his thighs that needed to be shaved. They were so minor that you can’t even tell where she removed them because they weren’t tightly matted at all. She explained that the real issue was simply his very thick undercoat, which made the fur on his rear feel dense. All he needed was a thorough deshedding treatment to remove the excess undercoat. That means Petco either misidentified a thick undercoat as severe matting or failed to recognize the difference altogether. Either way, it’s concerning that Petco’s grooming service couldn’t accurately assess something so basic. I’m actually grateful Petco turned us away. My dog received exceptional care from experienced professionals for less than Petco was going to charge, and the staff were far more knowledgeable, patient, and understanding of his anxiety and individual needs. The entire experience confirmed that I made the right decision by taking him to a veterinary clinic with the expertise to properly care for him. They loved his company, took the time to make him feel comfortable, and they look forward to seeing him again at his next grooming appointment. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Petco.

Scheduled an appointment for grooming. The store system went down. Never contacted to let appointments know that grooming was closed. Manager threw up their hands and said we didn't have phone numbers. So you can't call corporate and get assistance with that? Incompetent!!

Petco charges you a product fee as if they could bathe the dog without shampoo so you pay for a bath, but then you have to pay for the shampoo. They also tack on a scissor fee as if you could completely groom a little 8 pound dog with nothing but clippers.

I had scheduled a grooming appointment 2 weeks in advance. The day before the appointment, as I was checking my emails, there was a notification that the appointment had been cancelled. A phone call would have been the most appropriate and professional notification method. Also, they never return calls even when a message is left with one of the Petco associates.TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL!!!

Ashley was the best groomer I've had in Tallahassee, and I've had a lot at different grooming salons. Seems that groomers move around a lot because most of the ones I've had are gone when I book again. Hope Ashley and the rest of the team stay.
