On December 15, 2025, my dog Robert—a German Shepherd—was taken to the Banfield clinic in Miramar, Florida, due to noticeable testicular swelling and behavioral changes. Dr. Guillermo Barreto, who treated Robert, performed an examination focused primarily on the testicular area, where the issue prompting the visit was clearly visible. During that visit, Robert was treated with 100 mg of Rimadyl, 25 mg of Rimadyl, and the antibiotic Simplicef (200 mg). After the initial treatment failed, I took Robert for a follow-up consultation on January 5, 2026. During that visit, Dr. Guillermo Barreto again examined only the testicles, which remained swollen due to fluid accumulation (hydrocele). He did not assess the neck or lymph nodes. By that time, Robert was already showing clear signs of deterioration: increased fatigue, a weaker bark, and noticeable On this occasion, Dr. Barreto prescribed 15 mg of prednisone for 15 days—including a gradual dose reduction (tapering)—along with a single 80 mg injection of Convenia During the second treatment, the testicles temporarily returned to their normal size. However, as the prednisone taper began, Robert’s voice faded further, and he grew progressively weaker. He also developed swelling around his lips and muzzle As the days went by, I noticed his breathing becoming more labored and the appearance of new areas of swelling, including the front limbs, the preputial cavity (edema around the penis), and marked abdominal distension consistent with ascites ("pot belly"). Additionally, the testicles became inflamed again. I requested another appointment at Banfield Miramar, which was scheduled for February 16, 2026. Once again, I was present during the consultation. Dr. Barreto re-examined the testicles and stated that the dog needed surgery to remove the condition could be cancer. He also indicated that, given the dog's extreme weakness, he could not risk performing the procedure at the Miramar clinic due to the lack of adequate support in the event of an emergency. I asked him to please examine the neck area beneath the lower jaw, as I had noticed a large, hard mass there. However, after palpating the area, Dr. Barreto replied that he did not observe anything abnormal. Terrified to see Robert worsening by the day, we decided to urgently seek out another veterinary clinic. My wife found Hometown Animal Hospital in Weston, and we were given an appointment for the following day, February 17, 2026. We were seen by Dr. Hopking, who had requested Robert’s medical records from Banfield Miramar the day before our appointment. It was Dr. Hopking who, right from the start, informed us that Robert’s case was very complex and that his condition was unrelated to his testicles—meaning he should not undergo surgery, contrary to Dr. Guillermo Barreto’s recommendation. , Dr. Hopking examined Robert and palpated his neck, just below the lower jaw. She quickly detected firm, enlarged lymph nodes on both sides of his throat, each roughly the size of a golf ball. With great precision and professionalism, she told us: “I am very sorry, but it is highly likely that Robert has lymphoma.” Several X-rays were taken immediately, and cell samples were collected from various lymph nodes. The X-rays revealed the presence of fluid in the chest cavity, compressing the lungs. The following day, the pathology department confirmed Robert’s diagnosis: “Atypical Intermediate Lymphoma.” It is baffling that Dr. Barreto, who had several opportunities to treat my beloved Robert, failed to identify the possibility of lymphoma despite such clear evidence right before him: swelling in the front limbs and lips, two golf-ball-sized masses under the jaw, swollen testicles and prepuce, loss of voice, and generalized weakness. While Dr. Hopking suspected the diagnosis almost at a glance—barely a day after our visit to Banfield Miramar—Dr. Barreto never even considered the possibility. It is deeply painful to realize that one never truly knows in whose hands one is placing the life of a beloved being—a true member of the family.

I have been taking my two cats, who are a little over a year old, to this location mainly for their neutering procedures. Both surgeries went well, and I am grateful to the doctors for that. I enrolled in their wellness plan, but during visits, it appears to be additional issues are always found, leading to recommended treatments and medications. Since my cats are young and healthy, I would appreciate clearer explanations about why these are necessary. When I ask questions about these treatments, the responses feel a little brushed off or not explained too well, and the conversation tends to focus heavily on pricing. I do appreciate the transparency about costs, but it is mentioned so frequently that it sometimes takes away from discussing the actual treatment. Appointments often involve long wait times. Even when I arrive about 15 minutes early, I do not get checked in until the scheduled time, and after being placed in a room with no service, I have to wait over an hour (this has happened to me more than 3 times). While the lack of service is not the clinic’s nor staff’s fault, it makes the wait feel much longer even though I understand they run behind of their schedule. About staff hospitality —some seem to be friendly, while others seem disengaged. I have also experienced some communication challenges, which may be due to a language barrier at times, as not all staff appear fully comfortable explaining certain treatment details in English. Overall, I do really appreciate the care my cats have received so far. However, I do not plan to renew the wellness plan, as it feels unnecessary to continue paying over $100/per month for two cats who are doing very well.
