This was my first time trying Petco’s grooming services, and overall, it was a frustrating experience.
I booked online, and I tried calling multiple times with questions beforehand, but no one ever answered the listed phone number.
When I arrived, the staff were friendly and asked if my dogs had any health concerns. I explained that one of my dogs had a seizure a couple of months ago (now off medication), and the other has congestive heart failure but only takes medication about once a month.
What made me uncomfortable wasn’t that they wanted to check with my vet—I understand the need to confirm that a dog is healthy enough for grooming. What bothered me was that it turned into a full breakdown of both of my dogs’ medical history. They never actually asked the vet if grooming was appropriate.
After speaking with my vet, they ended up refusing service for both dogs due to “policy.” While I understand the need for safety procedures, this experience left me feeling dismissed and frustrated. Overall, it felt like they didn’t trust my judgment or my basic understanding of my own dogs’ care.
These are senior dogs—naturally, they have some health concerns. That shouldn’t automatically disqualify them from basic grooming care, especially when they’re stable and under a vet’s supervision.
In my opinion, Petco’s grooming service is not friendly or accommodating to senior dogs, and the communication—both before and during—was severely lacking.

Edit: In response to the owner’s comments—
I understand and fully support the need for safety in any grooming environment. However, my dogs were not denied service due to any actual stress or behavior at the appointment. They were denied solely because they’re older and have medical histories—both of which are well-managed under regular veterinary care.
I was transparent and forthcoming because I believe in responsible pet ownership, and that honesty was met with inflexibility and a blanket policy that, in my opinion, punished them simply for being senior dogs.
Your team never even asked my vet whether grooming was appropriate. Instead, they used the information I provided against my dogs, without clinical input or individual consideration. My opinion is that decision felt less like a concern for safety and more like an unwillingness to work with pets who just need a little extra understanding.
