  Very disappointing grooming experience. I made a grooming appointment online for my 16-week-old Dalmatian, Dolce, for 8:00 this morning. Petco later called me and explained that there was someone new who was not able to clean/groom her the way she needed to be groomed, so they recommended that I change the appointment to 1:30 PM. I agreed and brought Dolce in at 1:00 PM. When we arrived, three women greeted us and Dolce. Dolce is a shy 16-week-old puppy, but she was not barking, aggressive, or behaving badly. She was simply nervous and sitting quietly in the corner. When my significant other and I went to leave, we were stopped and told to wait because if Dolce would not allow them to take her to the grooming area, she would not be permitted to stay. A few moments later, we were told that Dolce would not be able to stay because she was not comfortable going with them. I completely understand that groomers have to prioritize safety, especially with young or nervous dogs. However, my concern is that if a grooming salon advertises that it can accommodate dogs, there should be trained staff available who know how to safely and patiently handle a shy puppy and transition her into the grooming area. What made this especially frustrating was that we were already asked to change our appointment because the original groomer was not able to handle Dolce’s grooming needs, only to arrive at the rescheduled appointment and be turned away for essentially the same issue. Dolce was not aggressive. She was not barking or attempting to bite anyone. She was simply a shy puppy who needed patience and proper handling and I fear she was being discriminated against. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we will not be returning to Petco in Hamden for grooming. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and ensures that customers with nervous or young dogs are given appropriate options rather than being turned away after going through the trouble of scheduling and rescheduling an appointment.

  Appointment was easily set up, one cancellation, ( of two ), was also done easily. The staff was great and welcoming to us and Toby, (dog), and their handling of him was great. After he was trimmed they made recommendations and complimented his behavior and looks. All in all, a good experience!
