As a veterinary technician in Santa Barbara, I have seen firsthand what excellent patient care looks like, and the team at VMSG exceeded every expectation I had.
My dog, Stormy, has epilepsy and has been under Dr. Higgins’ care, so when my other dog, Chompers, suddenly lost the ability to walk, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. After seeing his primary veterinarian, I was referred to VMSG. Because of the trust I already had in Dr. Higgins, I brought Chompers to the emergency hospital at VMSG the very next morning, hoping Dr. Higgins would be able to see him.
When we arrived first thing in the morning, Chompers was immediately triaged by the emergency department and evaluated by the emergency veterinarian. They assured me that Dr. Higgins would do his best to fit us into his schedule. They kept Chompers at the hospital and told me to grab a coffee while they worked on getting him seen.
Before I left, Heather, the Neurology Lead Technician, came up to me and spent time talking with me. She was incredibly kind, compassionate, and reassuring during what was one of the most stressful days of my life.
A couple of hours later, I received a call asking me to come back. Dr. Higgins met with us and explained that Chompers would need a CT scan to determine what was going on. We discussed our financial concerns, and the entire team was so understanding and helpful in working with us to figure out the best plan for Chompers.
After the CT scan, we received the diagnosis, Chompers had IVDD. Since Chompers was unable to urinate on his own, a urinary catheter was placed. Sara took the time to come out and carefully teach us how to clean and care for the catheter at home. She was patient, thorough, and made sure we felt comfortable before leaving.
Even more amazing, despite seeing us on a Friday, Dr. Higgins was able to fit Chompers into his surgery schedule that Monday. The entire process moved quickly because everyone understood how urgent his condition was.
When we dropped Chompers off for surgery, every single staff member we interacted with was kind, compassionate, and genuinely invested in his recovery. Because I’m a veterinary technician and love learning about procedures, the team even shared photos from his surgery with me, which meant so much. Throughout the entire process, Dr. Higgins personally called me multiple times with updates and took the time to answer all of my questions. I never felt left in the dark.
When I picked Chompers up after surgery, he was already back to his bright, happy self. Then, little by little, we started seeing progress. Within just 2–3 weeks, Chompers began standing on his own again. Today, Chompers is fully walking again (with his doctor approved short walks), something I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to see when he first became paralyzed.
I truly cannot thank Dr. Higgins, Heather, Sara, the emergency team, the neurology team, and the entire VMSG staff enough. As someone who works in veterinary medicine, I know how much dedication, skill, and compassion it takes to provide this level of care. The way they treated my family, my dogs, and me was exceptional.
One of the most emotional moments for me is that Chompers is now heading to his six-month post-op appointment with Dr. Higgins walking into the hospital on his own four legs, something he couldn’t do during his first visit.
Thank you, VMSG, for giving Chompers his life back. We will be forever grateful. ❤️🐾
