I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Petco grooming.
I brought in my Pomeranian, and the woman at the front desk handled him in a way that immediately made me uncomfortable. Instead of giving him even a few seconds to get familiar with her, smell her hand, or feel comfortable, she started leaning over him, pulling at his fur, touching him from different sides, and pushing him around.
A dog is not a stuffed animal. Dogs understand body language, pressure, tone, and the way people approach them. Anyone working professionally with animals — especially in grooming — should understand basic dog behavior and know how to approach an unfamiliar dog without immediately making it feel threatened or stressed.
Eventually, my dog growled at her. I honestly do not blame him at all. He has been groomed many times before and has always happily stayed with groomers without any issues. I have never seen him react like this during a grooming appointment.
What bothered me even more was what happened afterward. Instead of acknowledging that her approach may have caused his reaction, I was given the phone numbers of two other groomers and was told that they work with “aggressive dogs” and use force when necessary.
That response was honestly even more disturbing to me.
My dog is not an aggressive dog. He reacted to being handled in a way that made him uncomfortable. Labeling a dog as aggressive after provoking a defensive reaction, and then recommending groomers specifically because they are willing to use force, shows a serious lack of understanding of animal behavior.
Needless to say, I will not be taking my dog to those groomers either.
If you work with dogs, you should know how to earn their trust before grabbing, pulling, pushing, and handling them however you want. Different dogs have different personalities, and professional animal care requires patience, proper handling, and an understanding of canine behavior.
After seeing how my dog was treated before the grooming even started — and hearing the solution they suggested afterward — there was absolutely no way I was comfortable leaving him there.
I would not trust this location with my dog again, and I strongly recommend that management provide additional training on basic dog handling, stress signals, and humane grooming practices.
I’m also attaching photos showing how calm, happy, and comfortable he was going to grooming appointments in the past. He has never had a problem with grooming before.
