If you need pet food and supplies I suggest you go elsewhere. This store has not been great for some time, but my last visit was also the last straw. The store is dingy, depressing, and as others have noted, there are frequently people sleeping or pan-handling on the ground just outside the door. In spite of being a very large space there doesn't seem to be much in there, which leaves the impression of dreary emptiness. Often there are sparse or empty shelves, and even when shelves are not empty there is a poor selection compared to a few years ago when you could usually find what you need. Now they frequently do not have products in store consistently. Many items I've been used to buying at Petco are "out of stock," have only one left on the shelf or are simply gone with no explanation.
A recent order for pickup was handed to me in a paper bag stapled shut, and when I opened the bag at home I found that every one of the cans of cat food was dented. Most people do not want to pay full price for dented cans, so obviously they are using store pickup orders as a way to fob off their hard-to-sell dented ones to unsuspecting customers. On my visit yesterday I mentioned this to the only staff member visible in the store and he literally threw up his hands and said "That wasn't me that did that, I have nothing to do with that. I can't help you." When I then mentioned my disappointment that several items were not available, once again the throwing up of the hands and a response of "I have no control of that, there's nothing I can do for you." I pointed out that this was very poor customer service and said that I was considering taking my business to their competitor. The employee shrugged his shoulders and said "That's ok."
I told him that I would communicate my experience to corporate customer service. He began fussing with his screen and muttered "You aren't making a complaint," which made no sense to me as I certainly WOULD be filing a complaint, but had no intention of doing so through this person. I would have simply left at that point but it was late and I needed cat food so I asked him to please hurry up and finish checking me out and he said "Oh, I thought we were making a complaint." I told him I would take care of it later at my convenience and he said he was the store manager and that his badge number would be on the receipt. Surprised that a manager would behave this way, I bluntly told him that if he was in fact the manager and was getting a paycheck for it, he should be doing a better job. He replied that "abusive language would not be tolerated". I did not raise my voice or use inappropriate language, and if a customer politely letting a manager know they are dissatisfied is "abusive," then there's a problem and it isn't with the customer.
There was more nonsense from this "manager" which is too silly and tiresome to relate, but on top of everything else it took far longer than it should have to purchase a few cans of pet food. I assume he was either being deliberately slow to waste my time or else simply wasn't comfortable working the register. I will note that on previous visits I found some staff members to be pleasant and helpful, and if they couldn't resolve an issue they directed me to the phone number or resource that did resolve it. The contrast with that helpfulness, which had caused me to somewhat overlook the other issues with the store, was pretty striking.
I've finally realized that there's no reason to continue shopping here even if it is a few miles closer. There is a much nicer PetSmart in Mountain View as well as Pet Food Express, and a number of smaller, independent pet stores, including the awesome Pet Club in Cupertino. So skip this grungy location and this company which doesn't seem to care and take your business where it will be appreciated.
