About

VeterinarianAnimal Hospital
Where experience matters. Family Owned and Operated. Santa Monica Pet Medical Center has been serving the Westside since 1961. Our doctors and senior staff have been with us, on average, for over 15 years. That's experience and dedication that you're not going to find at any other hospital. We only schedule 30 minute appointments so that you and your doctor can have a complete, un-rushed conversation about your pet's health. We are family owned and operated. That means that we make our own decisions about what treatment plans to offer, what referral hospitals and expert doctors to refer cases to and what products to carry. Corporate hospitals don't have that luxury - what they offer, where they refer to and what they carry are dicated to them by corporate headquarters - not by what is best for the patient. Call us today to experience a warm, friendly and patient-oriented experience.

Our compassionate and caring team of Doctors, Veterinary Technicians and Administrative Staff are committed to bringing you the very best in veterinary care for your pet. Our veterinarians are some of the finest in the area. At Santa Monica Pet Medical Center we offer veterinary acupuncture. This Eastern Medicine treatment is used as an alternative to or an adjunct to Western Medicine. Veterinary acupuncture can be highly effective to help control pain and other medical conditions. At Santa Monica Pet Medical Center, our goal is to provide every patient with the most compassionate, comprehensive medical care available. In doing so, we will treat each client as a welcomed guest and each pet as our very own. We offer complete animal health care services to make sure your pets stay happy and healthy.

Physical Examination

We recommend a complete physical exam for your pet on a yearly basis. Lots of changes can occur from year to year, especially as your pet gets older. Preventative health care recommendations are made based on examination findings and your pet’s individual needs and situation, which you help us to determine. This may include blood, urine, or fecal tests, vaccinations, dietary or exercise advice, and life-style changes.

Vaccinations

Your pet depends on your protection in many ways. The common things they need are shelter, food, water, exercise and love. However, diseases spread by other animals are an ever-present threat to the health of your pet. We live in a high-risk area for diseases spread by other animals such as ticks and mosquitoes. Vaccines are an important protection for your dog.

Dentistry

The American Veterinary Dental Society recommends a full dental cleaning every six months for your pet, just the same as your dentist recommends for you. Still, imagine what that cleaning procedure would be like for you if you did not brush your teeth at all between dental visits. With proper home care, your pet may not need that six month dentistry, thus saving you the expense and your pet the extra anesthetic.

Spay & Neuter

Your pet is a companion, a friend, and in a real sense a member of your family. In order to reduce the number of animals ending up in shelters or being euthanized. Together you can work as a team to help reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned animals. Both male and female dogs and cats are mature enough to reproduce between the ages of six to nine months.

Additional Services

Micropchipping

Every day a beloved family pet is lost. Tragically, most never make it back home because their owners didn't identify them. The MicroChip is the professional way to identify your pet and is proven safe and effective. A small chip, the size of a rice grain, is injected under the skin of your pet. The procedure is very safe, very similar to getting a vaccination. The chip is encoded with a unique I.D. number that is registered to you. If your pet ever gets lost and is brought to an animal shelter or clinic, they are scanned to see if they have a microchip. If a microchip is found, the number is submitted to a national data base center which is called to locate the owner. Just like a vaccination, it is injected under the skin of your pet where it remains safely for life. This inexpensive procedure can be done anytime and protects virtually any pet in your household.

Parasite Prevention

Heartworms are easy to prevent in dogs and cats by a simple monthly pill or topical, however, very dangerous and costly to treat once the pet gets heartworms. Year-round Flea and Tick Prevention is also necessary to prevent transmission of disease.

Nutrition

Don’t be fooled by the label on the bag of dog or cat food. If you are not familiar with what makes up the ingredients listed, it can be quite misleading. Allow us to educate you or give you a recommendation about the proper food for your pet. Good quality food can be tailored for the type of pet you have to prevent and/or manage health issues that are common among that breed. Take care to feed your pet only pet food (no table food), feed measured amounts once or twice a day, and limit treats. Remember to always provide lots of fresh, clean water at all times. Whether your pet is fighting a weight problem or requires a special diet in conjunction with health care management and treatment, our Staff will counsel you on the many nutritional options that are available to pet owners.

NEW PUPPY & KITTEN VISITS

These first visits are especially fun and very important in getting your new pet off to a good start. Our doctors perform thorough physical examinations, focusing on any internal or external parasite problems, congenital or developmental abnormalities. Our doctors and assistants will give you the latest information about diet, training, and preventative care.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

My feline pets have been patients for 25 years at Pet Medical Center. I am very satisfied with the care they receive. Particularly from Dr. Hernandez. She is amazing and always follows up with us so that we know she is attentive to our pets.

I used to go here until they charged me for everything except figuring out the issue with my dog’s bladder. My dog had been peeing blood for 3 weeks I went in and they wanted me to pay for everything under the sun except get to the main issue. I had to go to a different vet to figure out that he had a kidney stone the size of a tennis ball and they weren’t pressuring to spend more money. My new vet actually wanted to help my dog with his issue without all these unnecessary charges. Please do better.

We have been bringing our dogs to Santa Monica Pet Medical Center for a few years and have been very happy with the decision to make them our vet. Most recently we lost our 15 year old sweet girl, Daisy. Dr. Harrison Saling was amazing at explaining what was going on with our pup. He is bright, knowledgable, caring, and a wonderful communicator. Thanks so much for helping us through a trying time. We are grateful to have you as our veterinarian.

I have been bringing my dog, Fennec, to see Dr. Hillebrand since the day I adopted her. Everyone on the team are incredibly friendly and extra patient with my anxious pup. In addition to the routine check-ups and wellness visit, SMPMC has been a wonderful resource when it comes to navigating training and behavioral issues I have encountered through the years. Another way SMPMC has been a major resource in my life is their team of vet techs and support staff who also offer pet sitting, walking, and additional care services. I am definitely THAT pet parent. So, when I have to leave my pup for a trip, knowing I'm leaving her with expert pet caretakers (and lovers) makes leaving her a bit easier. These relationships has also helped make our visits a bit less stressful for Fennec as well.

Dr. Tony George was outstanding and took such good care of my dog. He was knowledgeable, caring and had a wonderful way of putting my little one with anxiety at ease. We left with everything we needed to make my little guy feel better after just one appointment.
