When your dog or cat needs routine veterinary services in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood, choose Banfield Pet Hospital. Located on University Avenue with quick access to State Route 163 (aka the Cabrillo Freeway), our vet clinic is just five minutes north of Balboa Park and sandwiched between the Marston Hills and University Heights areas. We’re proud to provide general practice veterinary care for your dog, cat, puppy, or kitten. Whether your pet needs parasite prevention or treatment for injuries and illnesses, our veterinary team is available to help during business hours.
I took my cat to Banfield Pet Hospital because she had blood in her stool. I brought in a fecal sample and was told results would take 24–72 hours. A week went by with no call. I called them, and they still didn’t have the results. Another week passed, and I called again, and they still didn’t have the results. THREE WEEKS went by with no call or update, so I called them AGAIN and that’s when they admitted the lab had lost the sample/results.
So I brought in a second fecal sample. Then the exact same thing happened again weeks of silence. AGAIN On the THIRD week, I finally called them myself, only to be told, “Oh yeah, the results came back and there were no parasites.” Nobody called me. Nobody texted me. Nobody followed up. This took almost TWO MONTHS just to get a basic answer, and the only reason I even got one was because I kept chasing them down myself. Then after all of that, they told me I needed to pay for another exam if I wanted anyone to actually look at my cat. Absolutely ridiculous.
If you care about timely communication or competent follow-up for your pet, avoid this place. Losing test results once is bad enough. Never contacting the owner is unacceptable. They completely lost my trust and my business.

I’ve been a Banfield customer for 7 years, and my dog was always treated at the Pacific Beach location, where I never had any issues. However, after moving and starting to use the Hillcrest location for the past almost 2 years, my experience has been extremely disappointing.
This specific location constantly seems to have problems, ranging from canceled appointments to incorrect charges. Recently, I requested a change to my dog’s wellness plan, and I was told everything had been updated correctly. Despite that, I continued being charged the old amount.
I also had a very concerning experience after my dog’s dental cleaning. He developed an infection that lasted for over a week, and when I tried to bring him back to be checked, I was told they couldn’t see him.
After multiple frustrating experiences, I’ve decided I will not return to this location. I would rather drive to the Pacific Beach unit, where the staff has always been professional, organized, and caring. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the Hillcrest location based on my experience.

My most recent visit marked my final visit to Banfield. I have to give at least 1 star for being available for a check up on a Sunday morning.
My dogs are not new to Banfield, and I am well aware of their Wellness protection program. I did not balk at the ~$900 for vaccinations, check up, 6 months of Simparica Trio for my two dogs, and a pedicure. We agreed with the front desk and there was no fuss on the pricing.
2 and half hours later, I get a call that one dog is too anxious for nail trim and questioned on her wellbeing at home. Had they noted these on her file from previous visits, it would not be new to them that she is a rescue. This goes back to you no longer having face to face with the vet. I pay you $250/dog, the least the provider can do is chart the dogs health both physically and mentally or allow me to be with my dogs so they can be at ease.
Further to that, they didn't even do the vaccinations and instead tried to sell me on the wellness plan. Listen, this isn't my first Banfield visit nor is it my first pitch on the wellness plan. We didn't even fuss on the estimated cost earlier. Do the vaccinations and then pitch the wellness plan when we pick up the dogs. "Oh but we can do the vaccinations real quick" no you lost me at this point. You spent two and half hours to cursory glance at my dog, tried unsuccessfully to trim their nails (somehow the techs at Petco have no problem), didn't perform the vaccinations, and never ONCE met you face to face Dr. Quiroz.

You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
