OakVet almost KILLED my dog
This review is specifically about the lack of care Luna received under Dr. McIntyre. It is not about her surgeon, who was helpful, communicative, and, from everything I was told, performed Luna's surgery successfully.
We were referred to OakVet after Luna was found to have a lung mass. She underwent major thoracic surgery, and afterward I was told everything had gone well. They called to say she was recovering and that I should likely be able to take her home the next day.
Instead, the next day they called and told me LUNA HAD COLLAPSED.
By the time I got there, she was on oxygen, unable to breathe on room air, and very clearly not doing well. That's when "Dr." McIntyre took over her care. asked her what her differential was and what she thought was happening. She repeatedly told me she did not know. Instead, she told me to leave because, in her words, "my brain power is better suited for her than for you."
As a physician, I was shocked by both the response and the complete lack of empathy, but I wanted what was best for Luna, so I left and trusted them to take care of her.
The next day, they called and told me Luna still could not get off oxygen. They had some ideas about what might be happening, but still did not know why she was deteriorating. Then I was told that they would not continue her care unless I put down another $8,000, on top of the $15,000 I had already paid. Let's be clear, the standard protocol is to pay a deposit at drop off and then the rest at pick up, not hold a dog hostage while she's in the ICU.
When I asked if they could please focus on treating my critically ill dog first and deal with the financial accounting afterward, Dr. McIntyre told me, "I'm going to hang up now," and hung up on me.
True to her world, Luna did not receive any care after that. PER THEIR OWN RECORDS that I have, she received no food and NO PAIN MEDS 2 DAYS AFTER HER CHEST WAS SLICED OPEN. She was splinting and by the time. When I finally picked Luna up, she was SO HUNGRY because she had barely eaten for 24hrs.
And then she got worse. Within about a day, she could barely breathe, and we rushed her to UC Davis. By the time we got there, she was blue. I had to drive 90 minutes to UC Davis while hearing her gasping for breath in my car -- that's the kind of trauma that stays with you. I thought I was going to lose her.
Because of the conscious lack of care and mismanagement at Oakvet, Luna ended up in the UC Davis ICU for seven days.
At Davis, she underwent a much more extensive workup and was found to have pulmonary emboli and pulmonary hypertension, neither of which had been diagnosed or treated at OakVet.
Make no mistake: Luna is alive today because I go her OUT OF OakVet and because the UC Davis team saved her.
The lack of care at Oakvet didn't just cost me an enormous amount of money in additional veterinary bills, it almost cost Luna her life, and it cost me tremendous suffering. I drove over 1000 miles in that week alone going back and forth to different ERs and Davis. The picture here is when she finally got to Davis.
Someone entrusted with the care of critically ill animals should understand that treating life--any life-- is a privilege, not just a transaction.
I am writing this because other pet parents deserve to know what happened to Luna before placing their own animal in this hospital's care. No pet, and no family, should have to go through what we did.

The staff at OakVet are incredible, and Dr. Kathrina Mathews and the internal medicine team went above and beyond in caring for my cat, Harley, throughout his time having chronic kidney disease. The front desk is always responsive, kind, and helpful, and the internal medicine department is beyond amazing.
Dr. Mathews provided so much support for me as I navigated the stress of CKD as a cat parent. There were many appointments where the blood test results weren't what we hoped for, where I was worried about cost on a budget, and where it all just felt like too much. Through all of it, Dr. Mathews always offered as many options as possible to meet me where I was, addressing both my needs and Harley's. Both of us felt held and cared for at every single appointment. She was always responsive and kind when I sent countless emails asking about symptoms and for advice, and with each visit, she'd get on the floor to give Harley a ton of love and always gave us the time we needed.
Dr. Mathews's team in internal medicine was also always exceptional, showing such care and love towards Harley with each visit.
When Harley passed away a little over a month ago, I knew Dr. Mathews was who I wanted by mine and Harley's sides in those final moments, and I'm so grateful she was. If you're navigating an illness with your cat, I highly recommend choosing Dr. Mathews as the person to help you through it.
