Dr. Barrera and the vet tech team at the Lakewood location are truly tremendous! They treat my two cats on the wellness plan with SO much love and care. Every time I come in, they’re so excited to see them and they are sooo gentle with them. They always have a room ready for them and are so great to work with!

Went today to get my sick kitten checked and they right away said I needed to drop my pet off since they had to run a bunch of test on her which were clearly not needed. Took my pet and left. They are just looking for money and not even trying to help a sick pet. Will never go back.

Front desk needs friendlier and more knowledgeable staff to handle their clients and pets needs. The girls handling the pets themselves seem reliable. Management makes it feels like they want to make money out of you rather than help you and your pets well-being. Covid has only made it harder to know if they are treating your pet correctly or not.

I specifically made the appointment surrounding a possible issue my dog might have due to a broken tooth. When I made the appointment they told me she has other things in her plan before it renews that can get done while she's here...I said great let's do it but my main concern is her tooth..the person on the phone said sure no problem can you drop her off at 8:15am. I said sure...the day of the drop off I speak to the receptionist and hand over a piece of her tooth as proof in a zip lock bag. She said great I'll put it in with her paper work so they will see it. I left . I called about 4 times to see how my dog was doing and each time was told someone will reach out to me it's been a crazy day. I understood and called again at a later time because nobody called back. Never got an update whatsoever. 9 hours later I get the call that she is ready for pick up. I ask the gentleman on the phone so is everything fine with her tooth? He said Oh yeah everything was fine nothing was broken. I said "are you sure because I brought you the piece that broke off" he said "oh I didn't see that let me check it might be a piece of tarter" I said "yeah I know the difference between tarter and a tooth but ok I'll be right there." So I arrive and wait and the receptionist gets to me. I said so "they didn't find anything with her tooth?" She said "no we had both doctors check both. It might have been a baby tooth." I said "oh that's crazy wow maybe." She then responded with "the doctors know the shapes of the teeth and know what to look for"..lol...My dog comes out the dude with the blue hair explains again to me no broken tooth..and I was like "um let me show you where it is." After a couple tries digging in my dogs mouth she calmed down enough and I was able to pinpoint where the broken piece came from..it wasn't a small chip...it was a sizable break. He says "oh yeah I see it." He takes her back and brings her out again. He then says "they said the tooth looks fine but if we try to extract it there could be complications because the lower jaw could break trying to extract the tooth and it has 3 roots to so its tricky and we don't do that here." I asked "well I just want to know if she will be ok I don't want her to be uncomfortable when she is eating. He said "well the nerve might be exposed but you could go to a vet dentist that can take x-rays and see what's going on and put a cap on it. You can also feed her softer foods" I said "well can you direct me to a place." He looks on the computer names a couple places and says "they are mostly in Orange county so yeah." At this point I'm irritated and take my dog and leave. I don't know how a person like me who doesn't practice veterinary medicine found that broken tooth when 2 doctors and possibly a couple vet techs missed it. And why was I outsourced to a different company if Banfield at the Downey location was able to extract the same type of tooth lower jaw parallel to the one that was broken same 3 roots and all. I dont pay all this money for fun and I expect my dog to come out better than when she went in. That is a full running hospital.

Great service. So much better than going to petsmart Banfield. Feels like a real doctor's office. No hustel and bustle of a store before you get to the doctor. Real clean and they have free coffee. Great waiting room.
Frequently Asked Questions About Banfield Pet Hospital

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
• Optimum Wellness Plans® Virtual Visits: If you have an Optimum Wellness Plan and scheduled a Virtual Visit, you’ll save valuable time and get quality care from the comfort of your home.
