I am dissatisfied with the handling of our family pet while he was in the custody of Banfield Pet Hospital in Escondido on 4/09/2026.
I took our pet to Banfield Pet Hospital in Escondido as referred by the Humane Society of Escondido where our pet got his shots and was neutered. Banfield Pet Hospital should change their name from "Hospital" to "Clinic" as they were unable to treat our pets injury.
Please let me be clear, this veterinarian clinic not being able to treat our pet is not why I am dissatisfied. My disappointment stems from several fronts:
First, they did not see our pet for almost 4 hours after he was admitted to their clinic. Even though I stated he was bleeding and the injury was near the base of his tail near the groin area. They should have looked at his wounds sooner as he was so badly injured that he had to be put down when we transferred him to the other referred veterinarian.
Secondly, I was given dishonest information over the phone. When I called in 3-1/2 hours post drop off to check on our pet. I asked if our pet cat has been looked at and if he is OK. The agent on the phone said yes the nurse looked at him and he is calm and doing well. I replied, good I figured he was OK since I had not received a call yet. So I asked again, "OK so did he get like a mini kitty triage already or something? I just want to make sure he is OK like his condition" The agent said, "Yes he has been looked at and the doctor will look again after their lunch break." Well, I find this hard to be true that the pet was looked at. I received an alarming call from a doctor at Banfield Pet Hospital in Escondido 4 hours after admitting the pet stating the cats skin has been degloved and he needs to be transferred to another vet that can perform the necessary treatment as soon as possible. The original call I had with the agent contradicts the doctors alarming information as I find it hard to believe he was 'looked' at.
Thirdly, when we picked the pet up for pet transfer, we saw the doctor, whom did not introduce herself, and she briefly explained the severity of our pets condition. My wife told her and the staff, "I hope our pet does not die from this, he was bleeding when we dropped him off and you guys let him bleed out in agony 4 hours before seeing him?...Why did you not treat him sooner!" The doctors reply was, "We had an emergency but he should be OK and the other vet will be able to help you." Well he was not OK he died. So no thanks for the failed prognosis.
On a side note, no disrespect to the other pet ofc. I'm curious if the other pet with the urgent emergency survived, because ours did not.
We are not looking for apologies from Banfield Pet Hospital in Escondido. It is too late for this. I do want other visitors to think twice and make sure you get a clear response from the staff if you are considering using their services.
Frequently Asked Questions About Banfield Pet Hospital

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
• Optimum Wellness Plans® Virtual Visits: If you have an Optimum Wellness Plan and scheduled a Virtual Visit, you’ll save valuable time and get quality care from the comfort of your home.
