I stopped in today to pick up a carbon filter for my aquarium and decided to take a look at the fish section while I was there. I normally purchase fish from a local specialty fish store, but I enjoy browsing and seeing what different stores have available. What I saw was honestly disappointing. Numerous tanks were visibly dirty, with algae-covered glass, discolored water, and heavy stocking levels. Several tanks appeared overcrowded to the point that fish had very little room to move naturally. The center bank of aquariums was especially concerning, with conditions that looked far beyond simply missing a routine cleaning or maintenance day. What stood out most was the condition of the gravel substrate in many of the tanks. It was visibly dirty, with a buildup that appeared to have accumulated over a long period of time. Any aquarist knows there's a difference between a tank that needs routine maintenance and one that has been neglected for an extended period, and many of these tanks unfortunately looked like the latter. Most troubling was the condition of many of the fish themselves. Numerous fish appeared lethargic, inactive, and stressed. In one tank, fish were packed together and simply hovered in place with little to no movement. As someone who keeps aquariums and cares deeply about aquatic animal welfare, it was difficult to see. I understand that retail fish departments can be challenging to maintain and that occasional issues happen. However, what I observed appeared to be the result of ongoing neglect rather than a temporary problem. These are living animals that depend entirely on their environment and care. Petco should do better. Edited to add - Update: Following this review, I submitted detailed documentation and photographs through Petco's customer care and ethics channels. I have since received requests to contact the store directly, including calls from store personnel. However, my concern is not obtaining the store's explanation of events. The conditions I observed existed within the store itself, which is why I requested that the matter be independently reviewed by district management, an aquatics specialist, or other qualified personnel outside the location. My questions have focused on whether such a review has occurred and what corrective actions have been taken. Customers place a great deal of trust in Petco when purchasing live animals. Most customers are not experienced aquarists and may not recognize signs of chronic husbandry issues, stressed livestock, or deteriorating system conditions. That is why I believe independent review of serious animal welfare concerns is important.
