I never thought I would have to make a post like this, but I need to share what happened with my Buddy. 💔🐾
I took Buddy to Banfield Pet Hospital because he was very sick and not eating, and I was extremely concerned that something could be wrong with his mouth.
While Buddy was still at Banfield being examined, I called the hospital and spoke with the manager. I specifically asked the manager to please tell the veterinarian to check Buddy’s mouth.
When I later picked Buddy up, I spoke to the veterinarian face-to-face and again brought up my concern about his mouth. I was told there was no need to check his mouth because his blood work did not indicate that his problem was related to his mouth.
I trusted that professional opinion and took my baby home.
The very next day, I took Buddy to another veterinary hospital. They examined his mouth and found extensive necrosis on his tongue.
That is what is so difficult for me to understand. I didn’t mention his mouth once in passing. I specifically asked for it to be checked while he was there, and then I raised the concern again directly with the veterinarian when I picked Buddy up.
Buddy then required extensive veterinary treatment. I spent thousands of dollars trying to save him.
Sadly, Buddy passed away on August 5. 💔
I understand that no veterinarian can guarantee an animal’s recovery or survival. I’m also not saying that checking Buddy’s mouth that day would have guaranteed a different outcome.
What I am asking is why his mouth wasn’t examined when I specifically asked for it to be checked—and why extensive necrosis was discovered by another veterinarian the following day.
Now, while grieving Buddy, I asked Banfield to cancel the Wellness Plans for Buddy and my other dog, Lucky. After this experience, I no longer feel comfortable entrusting Lucky’s care to Banfield.
Instead, I was told Buddy’s plan was set to not renew and that I would continue being charged $105.95 per month through June 2027, with $1,165.45 remaining in plan payments.
I was also told that I would have to pay $670.52 to immediately cancel Lucky’s plan.
I have asked Banfield Corporate to formally investigate Buddy’s care, review his medical records and the records from the veterinary hospital that discovered the necrosis the following day, and cancel both Wellness Plans without requiring me to continue paying these balances.
I have veterinary records, photographs, invoices, and documentation supporting what happened.
This isn’t just about money. This is about Buddy.
Buddy was my baby boy. He was family. I trusted Banfield with him, and I advocated for him by specifically asking them to check his mouth.
I can’t bring Buddy back, but I can speak up for him. ❤️🐾
I asked them to check my dog’s mouth. The next day, another veterinarian found extensive necrosis on his tongue. Buddy deserved to have my concerns taken seriously.

Good facility but the Wellness Plan is a scam. Do NOT get it!!! Any money you "save" is owed if you cancel early which was NOT explained to me. It's feels like a bait and switch.
Frequently Asked Questions About Banfield Pet Hospital

What preventive pet health care services does Banfield offer?
We believe that preventive care is the most effective way to keep your pet healthy throughout all stages of life. Our pet hospitals offer many preventive care treatments, including:
• Vaccinations
• Dental Care

What is an Optimum Wellness Plan?
Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to provide annual preventive care. They include head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, dental care and more! Since wellness plans are not insurance, they do not include treatment for unpredictable or abnormal conditions, however discounts would apply. Because pets need ongoing preventive care, wellness plans automatically renew at the end of each twelve month period (unless paid in full at enrollment).
How do I pay for an Optimum Wellness Plan?
You can spread the cost of your wellness plan across the 12 months of your annual agreement to make it easier to budget for the essential health care your pet needs. Your monthly payments can be automatically withdrawn from a checking or savings account or charged to a credit card so that you don’t have to worry about them once you enroll. We also offer the option of paying in full if you prefer.
What kind of appointment do I have?
• In-room appointments: You and your pet visit the vet together. Please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time
• Drop-off appointments: If you have a drop-off appointment, we will communicate a time to drop off your pet. Keep your phone nearby and we’ll call you when your pet is ready for pickup.
• Optimum Wellness Plans® Virtual Visits: If you have an Optimum Wellness Plan and scheduled a Virtual Visit, you’ll save valuable time and get quality care from the comfort of your home.
