At checkout, the associate (Dakota) refused to sell us a fish, stating that buying a tank and a fish on the same day was “a problem.” When asked to clarify, he said the decision was based on his personal preference and feelings, not on any clearly stated Petco policy. He repeatedly emphasized that he “has the right to refuse service,” including stating that he could refuse service to both my husband and me. The way this was communicated felt unprofessional and disrespectful, and it came across more like a power trip than customer service. My husband explained he has experience with fish care, including personal experience and exposure through a family member who owns a fish business, and that he is familiar with proper care, protocols, and procedures. Despite this, he continued to deny the sale without referencing any official policy. When I directly asked if this was simply his biased personal opinion, he became quiet and noticeably hesitant, and his co worker jumped in to help him by stating pet co does have the right to refuse services if they believe the pet will not be in good care. That’s what should have been said to us from jump. NOT Dakota feelings. What made this situation even more concerning was that while we were in the store, we observed him sell live mice to another customer (an older white gentleman) without issue, while denying service to us. The inconsistency in treatment was uncomfortable and raised serious concerns. Refusing service based on personal discretion not only creates a negative customer experience, but it also prevents Petco from making sales. As a result of this interaction, Petco has lost a loyal customer of over 10 years. I fully respect animal welfare, but decisions should be based on clear company policy—not personal feelings applied inconsistently. I hope management reviews this situation to ensure professionalism, consistency, and fair treatment of all customers
