I have to say I’m a little unhappy a while I’ve been returning to Western Veterinarian for years, working with multiple pets, and I was disappointed with my recent visit. I explained that my dog had hookworm symptoms—the same issue I’ve dealt with before on another dog—and expected a straightforward, relevant evaluation.
What happened:
- The staff ordered two tests before confirming hookworm as the diagnosis, despite my clear concern about hookworm based on prior episodes.
- I was presented with a bill of about $300 for the visit and tests. This felt high, especially since there was no upfront discussion of pricing before the tests were run.
- In the past, I’ve had significantly different experiences with costs (e.g., $275 for horse surgery, which makes the current charges feel inconsistent).
Impact:
- The process left me unsure about whether the testing was necessary or appropriately ordered for this specific case.
- My trust in the practice has been affected, particularly since I’ve noticed changes since the previous doctor left the practice and the corporate shift that followed.
- The overall experience did not meet my expectations for communication or transparency about pricing and rationale for tests.
What I’d like to see (or would help me return to trust):
- Clear, up-front pricing for tests and visits, with the ability to approve tests before they’re performed.
- Transparent reasoning for choosing one test over another, especially when a client already suspects a specific condition.
- Consistent pricing across visits and pets, and better communication about any changes in policies or leadership.
- A direct conversation about what happened in this case and steps the practice will take to improve.

Dr. Carol Akers and her team took wonderful care of my dog that needed oral surgery to remove fractured teeth. Dr. Akers consulted with my dog’s primary veterinarian and worked with me to help alleviate my dog’s nervousness. Dr. Akers genuinely cares for the wellbeing of her patients and their owners. She understands pets are family. Her team provided updates throughout the surgery and Dr. Akers spent time to document the procedure with pictures. Dr. Akers also described the process and explained how the surgery was done. I highly recommend Dr. Akers and her team at Western Veterinary Hospital for specialized oral care for pets.
