I highly recommend the services of NB Animal Urgent Care. We took our Yorkie mix after he started peeing blood. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist on the phone and in person, and by Matt, the lead veterinary technician / floor manager. Matt’s level of caring and knowledge is fantastic. He has a significant length of veterinary experience. Matt deserves great praise for his ability to explain things with great scientific accuracy and to explain the various processes and their complex relationships. For example, he began by asking about diet, which turned out to be a significant causal factor. He explained a long term wellness program. I also appreciate that Matt was obviously concerned about keeping costs low for customers instead of upselling. I ended up asking for many different tests even though I knew it would cost a lot more. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised that even the highest level of diagnostics were very inexpensive! I expected these prices 20 years ago! Reasonable costs let pet owners invest more into the well being of their pet. We talked to Matt for over an hour going into various details and about related care for our doggie that was well above and beyond what an emergency facility would be expected to provide. Matt never tried to cut us off for asking so many questions. We never had a time constraint to get us out as quickly as possible. He kept educating us while I took notes because he genuinely cared about our dog. He showed up various websites, meal plans, and various treatments after tonight’s emergency care. Matt would have probably talked to us all night because he loves what he does, he loves saving lives, and he supports customers who love their pets.
I started wondering how they were able to offer such exceptional care without all the corporate legalisms. Then it occurred to me… they are NOT owned by “private equity”. Private Equity are wall street investors that buy every company and push extreme cost reductions, drive customer costs sky high, and invoke extreme anti-customer policies. NB Animal Urgent Care is 100% privately owned by a real doctor (Dr. Lang) who lives in New Braunfels. They are NOT a corporate hospital. ((((Note: if you go to another animal ER and you have to sign away your legal rights, if they record everything using AI, and if they force you to scan a driver’s license to get service, then they are not there to help your pet. They are probably owned by private equity who wants to monetize you through surveillance and to squeeze out as much profit as possible for shareholders.)))) Our dog was treated like a family member and they treated me with the highest level of respect for my privacy and pet medical choices. Normally I’m highly skeptical of animal care professionals in the USA but last night, I felt a sense of trust that I never felt before.
We talked to Dr. Gibson, who explained the test results and how our dog could be treated in the short term and the long term. He explained the diagnosis in a detailed but easily digestible way, backed up by empirical data from various tests. I greatly appreciate that he formed his conclusions from reproducible data instead of guessing. Also, Dr. Gibson was engaged in triage of other pets in more critical condition but he was able to fit our dog in. I’m incredibly thankful that a doctor which such a high level of commitment lives 25 minutes from me. I have the greatest admiration for veterinarians. They have to know dozens of different anatomies, not just human anatomy, and that is not easy. As we left, it was pouring rain with heavy lightning. All I could think of is how Dr. Gibson, Matt, and everyone else there stayed an extra hour taking care of pets.
That night, after they closed, they emailed me my dog’s medical records and ultrasound videos so that I could show it to a primary care doctor. Amazing customer service! They even take care of an affectionate office kitty!
Our experience with Dr. Lang’s team was the absolute best I’ve ever had.

I took my cat here when I noticed he hadn’t used the litter box all day. I called ahead and told them I was on my way, and when I got there they were able to quickly examine my cat and give me the run down of his condition. He had a urinary blockage! They gave me an initial quote of 2500 for his treatment, and offered me some resources for payment plan options. Being a broke college student w little to no credit, I got denied, so they were able to provide me with a bare minimum treatment plan that amounted to 700. Still expensive, but way more affordable. They were able to get him unblocked and sent him home with some meds in about 3.5 hours! He’s been in great condition since our visit, and I’m so happy they were able to help us out!
Frequently Asked Questions About NB Animal Urgent Care
What constitutes a pet emergency?
A pet emergency can encompass severe injuries, acute illnesses, respiratory distress, ingestion of toxic substances, seizures, or any condition causing extreme pain or distress to the animal. If you're uncertain about the severity of your pet's condition, it's advisable to contact an emergency veterinary service for professional guidance.
How can I find an emergency veterinary clinic near me?
To locate an emergency veterinary clinic in your vicinity, you can utilize online search engines, consult pet healthcare applications, or contact your regular veterinarian for their recommendations. Many urban areas have 24-hour emergency clinics available. It's prudent to identify such facilities in advance, rather than searching during an actual emergency situation.
What should I do if my pet is injured or sick?
In the event of a pet injury or illness, it's crucial to maintain composure and immediately contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency clinic. Adhere to their instructions and refrain from attempting to treat your pet without professional veterinary guidance.
Is it safe to transport an injured pet to the vet myself?
For critically injured pets, transportation by trained professionals is often the safest option. Moving an injured animal can potentially exacerbate its condition. If you must transport your pet yourself, contact the emergency veterinary clinic in advance to inform them of your impending arrival.
How can I prepare for a pet emergency?
To prepare for potential pet emergencies, veterinary professionals recommend the following: maintain a readily accessible list of important phone numbers, including your regular veterinarian and an emergency clinic; assemble a pet first aid kit containing bandages, antiseptic, and other essential supplies; familiarize yourself with basic pet first aid techniques; ensure your pet is microchipped and wears identification tags.
What should I expect at an emergency vet clinic?
At an emergency veterinary clinic, cases are typically prioritized based on the severity of the condition. Be prepared to provide comprehensive information about your pet's health and any observed symptoms. Please note that you may experience a wait, as critical cases are given precedence.
How can I tell if my pet ingested something toxic?
Indications of potential poisoning in pets may include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, excessive salivation, lethargy, or agitation. If you suspect your pet has ingested a harmful substance, promptly contact an emergency veterinary service or animal poison control center.
Can I give my pet human medications in an emergency?
It is strongly advised against administering human medications to pets without prior consultation with a veterinary professional. Certain human medications can be highly toxic to animals and may cause severe adverse reactions.
How can I prevent emergencies in the first place?
Preventive measures to reduce the risk of pet emergencies include scheduling regular veterinary check-ups, pet-proofing your living space, securing harmful substances out of reach, and providing a safe environment for your pet. Statistics indicate that one in three pets will require emergency veterinary treatment annually. For comprehensive information about our emergency services, please contact NB Animal Urgent Care.
What is the cost of emergency veterinary care?
The cost of emergency veterinary care can vary significantly depending on the nature of the emergency and the required treatment. Emergency veterinary services often incur higher costs than routine care. It is advisable to inquire about payment options and consider pet insurance to help manage potential expenses.
