I wish you could do negative stars. It was about 8:00 pm yesterday on the 4th of January and my pregnant wife who is 35 weeks and about to pop had to figure out what to do while I was on shift. Well she tried to go to this vet who closed at 10:00 pm, a solid two hours, and even though this was a major emergency, our dog chewed an extension cord that was plugged in and burned her tongue and no idea about internals, and she was told they will not take her since even with emergencies they are appointment only. So they told pregnant wife of 35 weeks “sorry you can come tomorrow or drive to Dallas.” Absolutely ridiculous. The staff and the Vets could be amazing here but it means nothing when they can’t help her when the time to actually help in an emergency.

I have a total of 6 dogs & have used this vet service for a while; just last April my vet bill ran close to $500. Today, I brought in Jackson for an ear infection and 4 others. One for a nail trim, and the other 3 for the parvovirus vaccine with nail trims. I drove 55 mins. to this clinic, and I was told on the phone that I wouldn’t have to pay for the 3 nail trims bcz it would be included with the price of the shots. Upon arrival, I was reassured by the staff at the counter that I wouldn’t pay for the 3 trims as previously stated. However, that was NOT the case at all; their rebuttal was that a free nail trim is only applicable with the full set of shots. Of course, I tried to counter this but to no avail. I wouldn’t haul 4 extra dogs if I had known this in advance, just imagine driving 5 dogs in your SUV for 50 miles all by yourself. Thank goodness for my weather tech mat, is all I’ll say to the matter 💩😷To add insult to injury, I had to send back 2 of my smaller dogs bcz they did a poor job on their nails. Maybe to them $34 is not a lot of money but it is to someone who owns six dogs and drives a long distance to the vet. I ended with a bill for $275.00 & as a one-time courtesy, they could have done this at no charge and diffuse the situation. I refuse to EVER go back to them bcz they were dishonest and made me feel like I lied to them. Be well informed bcz they will attempt to add pressure on the client for unnecessary services. Goodbye, Veterinary Medical Center of Athens. You just lost a good client for life.

Got me on the schedule same day within an hour or two for a semi-emergency appointment during the holidays. Dr. Embry was nice and thorough. Very informative staff and his vet tech was very nice and gentle with my dog.

While I’m sure this is a good place, unfortunately my experience with them was very poor, insensitive, and lacked sympathy during a difficult time for my family after losing our almost one-year-old dog suddenly. My sister-in-law had taken her dog in on 12/23 due to vomiting, diarrhea, and not eating. Due to finances, we had to do supportive care at home and treat the symptoms that were presented. I’m a veterinary technician at an ER hospital, so we were comfortable doing the treatment plan at home. The morning of the 24th, we had called to speak to the doctor that helped us because we were concerned that it might be nightshade toxicity. The receptionist said she would let the doctor know and have him call us back. 3 hours passed, no call back, and our dog ended up passing away in our lap. We spent $615 on medication and tests that we really didn’t have, especially during the holiday season. To turn around the next day to spend another ~$350 to cremate our dog. I called the clinic after his passing to get information about private cremation. I explained to them we would be on our way and asked if they wanted me to call when we were on our way. They said yes and they would schedule it as a drop-off for cremation. Cool, great. So we called when we were about 30 minutes out to let them know. When we showed up 30 minutes later, they had no idea who we were or why we were there. When I explained to them it was for our dog that just passed, we got a cold-hearted sorry. Now I can agree this might have been more of an embarrassment apology out of awkwardness. They then put us in an exam room with our recently passed-away dog that we had already put in a bag for them. As the receptionist left, we received another cold apology that was then followed by them shutting the door laughing with a coworker. Imagine being the family that just suddenly lost their pet and the person helping you is showing zero sympathy and having a good time with their coworker? It was very insensitive given the circumstances that we were grieving. The technician that came in to get the information for the cremation walked in with no introduction to who she was and plopped right up on the scale as if we were old friends hanging out while she filled out everything on her tablet while our dead dog was on a wagon bagged up in the middle of the room. Once she was done getting our information, she grabbed all of her stuff and the wagon and, as she was leaving the room, ran the wagon/ our dog’s head into the door frame. She informed us that someone would be in shortly to get payment. This is probably the only thing that went well. I requested the entire medical record, including all the information. I feel that while yes, they worked within our budget, the doctor should have prioritized bloodwork over X-rays. I do not believe my sister-in-law was given all the accurate information to be able to make the best decision. We put our trust in this place and instead of getting help or any call back about our concerns on the 24th. We spent ~$615 on medications and some diagnostics. And another ~$350 for private cremation, to be disrespected and ignored, given cold-hearted sympathies, and a lot of insensitive actions. What hurts the most is I work in this field and while I understand how difficult it can be, I still show up to every euthanasia or DOA with sympathy and compassion. I felt like we received none of that here. We will not be utilizing this facility again. We will most definitely NOT be recommending them to anyone, even in a pinch.
