Extremely Unprofessional Management & Zero Accountability We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue, and this was our first time partnering with a Petco store. Unfortunately, our experience with this specific location and its manager was deeply concerning and completely out of line with Petco Love’s standards. For months, this manager had been asking us to bring our cats to his store because they had no partner rescue. When we finally agreed, he never looked us up in the Petco system, never verified our rescue status, and never told us what paperwork was required—something every other Petco store we partner with has done immediately and professionally (as we just did a new partnership today and they asked right away). As a small, 1-year-old rescue, we trusted his guidance. He offered none. After a few days and a couple successful adoptions, he began blowing up our phones about “fleas” in kittens who were fully vetted, flea-free, and had just come from foster homes with zero issues. Our volunteer had cleaned the kennels earlier that same day and saw none. We still offered to send someone to administer Capstar and fresh prevention within the hour. Instead of accepting support, he escalated further. Suddenly, 30 minutes later, we were told our cats “had to be out within 24 hours” because he claimed we “didn’t have proper paperwork” according to Petco Love—paperwork he had never once requested or mentioned to us before. When we asked why he hadn’t checked our rescue listing in the system (as every Petco manager is trained to do), he flat-out lied and said he had “no way to know if we were a legit rescue.” That is simply false. He absolutely did have a way—and it was his responsibility to confirm before allowing animals in the store. Despite us living two hours away, he repeatedly blew up multiple phone numbers demanding immediate removal, even after we told him we were actively coordinating pickup. We gave him two hours’ notice before our volunteer arrived. When the cats were picked up, the manager failed to return any of the adopters’ original vet paperwork—including their rabies certificates and physical tags. When we asked for it the next day, he claimed he “thought it was only a copy,” even though our actual paperwork includes the literal rabies tags taped to it. Instead of taking accountability, he argued and made excuses for over an hour, and then refused to mail the original paperwork. He even suggested just “taking a picture”—which is not acceptable for adopters who legally need their actual documents. This manager demonstrated a complete lack of training, transparency, and professionalism. He put our rescue at risk by ignoring required procedures, then blamed us for his own failures. This experience is exactly why this store still has no long-term rescue partners. Our kittens also never ended up having fleas and were checked, so that was also a lie. We have since begun working with another Petco store that immediately verified our status, told us what they needed before we bring in kittens, provided clear expectations, and has been nothing but professional—proving this situation was entirely due to this location’s poor management and lack of accountability. We hope Petco Corporate addresses this, because no rescue should be treated this way.
